Big win for West Branch boys

BELOIT — Sixth-seeded West Branch blanked 33rd-seeded Woodridge, 8-0, in a Division VI boys soccer sectional opener Monday.

West Branch (12-4) will host 22nd-seeded Orrville (6-7-2) in the sectional final at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Browns play for pride

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns will host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in a matchup of 1-5 teams.

It is not expected to have playoff implications. Only four NFL teams have went from 1-5 to the playoffs — 2020 Washington, 2018 Colts, 2015 Chiefs and 1970 Bengals.

7th Grade: Southeast beat Crestview 25-12, 22-25, 25-15. Crestview, (14-5), Brooklyn Barnhart 8 points with 7 aces, Jackie Rupert 7 points with 3 aces.

8th grade: Crestview beat Garfield 25-16, 25-23. Crestview, Claire Crable 10 points with 4 aces, Sydnee Ervin 4 points with an ace , Brayleigh Meier 4 points with 2 aces.

Next: 8th grade hosts Brookfield, 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Minerva girls 12th at Firestone Country Club

AKRON — Canfield finished 10th and Minerva 12th at the 33rd Ohio Division I girls golf state tournament that concluded Monday.

Canfield, reaching the state tournament for the first time in 12 years, had a two-day total of 683 (338-345) at Firestone Country Club’s Fazio Course, formerly known as the West Course.

Minerva, at state for the third time and first since 2014, shot a 784 (407-377).

The Lions won the Eastern Buckeye Conference and went 18-0 in the regular season.

Their top three golfers will return as sophomore Peyton Beaumariage tied for 50th with a 178 (95-83), freshman Emery Sell tied for 64th with a 193 (96-97) and junior Delaney Sell was 67th with a 198 (99-99). Senior Mady Bartley followed by tying for 69th with a 221 (117-104) and senior Hannah Kirkpatrick was 71st with a 223 (125-98).

JFK closing in on third straight state title

SUNBURY — The Warren JFK boys golf team is off to a good start toward a third straight state as the Eagles took the lead in the Division III first round Monday.

Warren JFK had an 18-hole score of 309, 10 strokes ahead of Berlin Hiland, at NorthStar Golf Club north of Columbus.

The Eagles are coming off their second straight and fifth state title overall last year.

Senior Julian Bolino leads Warren JFK with a 73, good for third place. Senior Andrew Fredenburg is tied for fourth place with a 74.

Salem Hills sectional champion Mooney is seventh in the team standings (332) and runner-up Mogadore is 10th (351).

Mooney senior Alex Eckstein, the 2023 state runner-up, is seventh with a 75.

Springfield senior Jackson Ensley is tied for 18th with an 80.

Hiland senior Jack Mast tops the 72-golfer field with a 70, one stroke ahead of Kalida sophomore Paul Stechschulte.
