Edmiston scores for Geneva
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Geneva College junior Cooper Edmiston scored his first collegiate touchdown in the Golden Tornadoes' 75-29 win over Bethany Saturday in front of 6,031 fans at Reeves Field.
Edmiston, a former Southern Local standout, scored on a 5-yard pass from Caleb Romano to give Geneva a 58-21 lead with 8:42 left in the third quarter. Edmiston had five catches for 37 yards.
Romano completed 33 of 43 passes for 475 yards and six touchdowns. He had plenty of local targets.
Senior Keaton Baker from United had 12 catches for 219 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior Luke Crumbacher from South Range had four catches for 82 yards and one touchdown.
Geneva --which has scored more than 50 points in three straight games for the first time ever -- improves to 5-3 overall and 5-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Golden Tornadoes get a bye week before hosting PAC-leader Washington & Jefferson on Nov. 8.
Steelers not working hard for their money
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Mike Tomlin's very public (and very calculated) shot at Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry for trading Joe Flacco to Cincinnati earlier this month was out of character for a coach who typically demurs when asked about things that happen outside of Pittsburgh.
In the moment, it provided a bit of viral theater. In hindsight, maybe it was also Tomlin's way of hinting at an underlying concern that his team's well-compensated defense might not be up to the task when forced to face quarterbacks that don't play for the Browns.
On a night where so much attention focused on Aaron Rodgers facing his former team for the first time, the takeaway from Pittsburgh's 35-25 defeat at the hands of Green Bay isn't that Rodgers "lost." If anything, the 41-year-old Rodgers has proven through seven games that he remains a worthy investment nearing the midpoint of his 21st season.
Far more troubling for the suddenly skidding Steelers (4-3) is that the star-laden defense isn't earning the considerable zeros on its collective paycheck. Nine days after Flacco picked them apart in an upset loss to the Bengals, Green Bay's Jordan Love became the first quarterback in NFL history to complete 20 consecutive passes while throwing for at least 350 yards without taking a sack or committing a turnover.
In a quiet locker room afterward, T.J. Watt, Jalen Ramsey, Cam Heyward and company offered clipped responses as to why a unit that Tomlin said over the summer might have the chance to be among the best ever in a franchise that has long been defined by its defense appears lost.
"There's not a lot of fight in us right now," Heyward said.
Atkins was a Raiders legend
(AP) -- George Atkinson, a hard-hitting former Raiders safety who struck fear in the opposition, has died. He was 78.
The Raiders said Atkinson's family informed the team of his death on Monday. The team said he died in Georgia without revealing a cause of death.
The Raiders called Atkinson the anchor of the team's "Soul Patrol" secondary of the 1970s that helped lead the team to its first Super Bowl title. Atkinson remained connected to the organization until his death.
Atkinson played 144 games in his career, spending 10 seasons with the Oakland Raiders and a final season with the Denver Broncos.
Kelly's buyout could cost LSU $52 million
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (AP) -- Less than 24 hours after a 49-25 loss to Texas A&M, LSU informed coach Brian Kelly that the program would be moving on from him and offensive coordinator Joe Sloan.
Kelly joined a long list of coaches who have been dismissed from their duties mid-season. According to Georgia football coach Kirby Smart, "It's the world we live in."
Smart was asked about the coaching change on Monday, days ahead of Georgia's rivalry game against Florida, which fired coach Billy Napier after a disappointing start to its season.
"At this time in the middle of the season, I think there's so much built around the playoffs. It's like everything is boom or bust, and you can't have a normal season," Smart said.
Kelly was in his fourth season of a 10-year contract worth about $100 million, leaving LSU with a buyout that could cost more than $52 million. Athletic director Scott Woodward said the school and Kelly are negotiating towards a fair solution for both parties.
