Clippers march past Tigers

COLUMBIANA — Columbiana scored seven touchdowns and two safeties in the first half and beat Wellsville, 54-6, Friday at Fisher Stadium.

The Clippers won their third in a row to improve to 4-3 overall and remained in striking distance in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference at 3-1, one game behind United.

Lucas Barber and Danny Mangiarelli both ran for two touchdowns and Zach Grant another, while Hayes McCoy threw touchdown passes to Senator Johnson and Drennen Bosela.

Kicker Geoffrey Malcomson scored eight points on six extra-point kicks and two-point conversion off a fake kick.

A couple of big plays from Johnson set up the Clippers’ first score, a 7-yard run by Barber only 2:22 into the game for an 8-0 lead.

Then Johnson took a swing pass 60 yards for the next score at the 6:54 mark of the first quarter.

The Clippers went ahead 22-0 on Mangiarelli’s 5-yard run with 2:09 left in the opening quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, Bosela hauled in a 13-yard scoring pass for a 29-0 lead.

After Wellsville misplayed the kickoff, the Clippers scored their first safety on a Johnson sack in the end zone with 10:39 left in the second quarter.

Johnson’s 45-yard punt return set up Mangiarelli’s 11-yard touchdown run for a 38-0 lead with 10:21 left in the first half.

The Clippers scored three more times in the final 2:11 of the second quarter — on Barber’s 90-yard run up the middle, on Barber’s safety and on Grant’s 33-yard run — giving Columbiana a 54-0 halftime lead.

Wellsville scored with four minutes to play on an Ethan Morris 5-yard run.

Wellsville — dressing 16 players Friday — dropped to 0-8 and 0-5 in the EOAC. The Tigers are 2-26 the last three seasons with both wins coming against Leetonia.

Both teams play next Friday as Columbiana travels to East Palestine and Wellsville hosts United.

Lisbon 56, Southern 7

SALINEVILLE — Lisbon scored 49 points in the first half — highlighted by Wyatt Newbold’s 70-yard punt return and Devin Kelly’s 45-yard punt return — for a 56-7 win over Southern Local on Friday.

The Blue Devils won their third in a row to improve to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.

The Indians lost their fourth straight to drop to 1-7 and 1-4 in league play.

Lisbon had more first downs (19-7) and total yards (370-170).

Grant Minor completed 6-of-10 passes for 116 yards and touchdown passes to Brady Lively and Ashton Hinchliffe and added 87 yards rushing and a touchdown on nine carries.

Hinchliffe ran for 90 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Cooper Terdina added 46 yards and a touchdown on four carries.

The Blue Devils ran for 254 yards on 32 attempts.

Newbold also had two catches for 58 yards.

Freshman Elijah Brown had an interception with a 16-yard return.

Southern’s only score came from Landen Heffner, who turned a short pass from Jack Pitts into a 57-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 28-7 in the second quarter.

Both teams play next Friday as Lisbon travels to Leetonia for the Spaghetti Bowl and Southern plays Valley Christian at Liberty High School.

East Palestine 50, Leetonia 13

LEETONIA — Zach Schnelle had nine carries for 158 yards and three touchdowns as East Palestine rolled to a 50-13 win over Leetonia on Friday.

East Palestine is 7-1 and 4-1 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference and will host Columbiana Friday in a battle of second-place EOAC teams.

Clark Rutledge completed nine of 11 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Rutledge also had five carries for 39 yards. Anthony Ottaviani added four carries for 35 yards and a touchdown.

Tanner Morrow caught two balls for 76 yards and a touchdown. R.J. May had five catches for 89 yards.

East Palestine had 176 yards passing and 255 total rushing yards.

For the Bears, Dylan Jones completed 10 of 16 passes for 81 yards and an interception. Ethan Mathia had 11 carries for 65 yards including a 37-yard touchdown run. Dylan Bennett had the Bears’ second touchdown.

Leetonia 3-5 and 1-4 host Lisbon Friday in the annual Spaghetti Bowl.
