Eagles advance to title game

EUCLID — The United boys soccer team knows the way to the district final.

The 16th-seeded Golden Eagles advanced to their fifth straight district final Wednesday with a 3-1 win over ninth-seeded Cornerstone Christan at Euclid High School.

It was the fourth win in a row for United, which is 9-7-2 on the season.

The Eagles booted three goals against a Cornerstone team that had given up only 15 goals in its opening 17 matches.

Jude Andrea played a part in all three goals — getting one goal and two assists. RJ Salmen also had one goal and one assist and Josh Hawkins scored a goal.

Cornerstone allowed only 18 goals all season, but 10 of those came in the three losses to United, Open Door and Painesville.

United will be seeking its third regional berth in five years as the Eagles play in the Division V district final at 1 p.m. Saturday at Salem’s Sebo Stadium.

That’s where the Eagles started the season as they dropped a 4-2 decision to Salem on Aug. 15.

United will play the winner of this afternoon’s match between 13th-seeded South Range and sixth-seeded Badger.

Cornerstone finishes at 14-3-1.

In the opener, United’s girls bowed out with a 1-0 loss to 12th-seeded Cornerstone. The winner’s goal was in the first half.

United, seeded 13th, finished 9-8-2, while 12th seeded Cornerstone (12-3-3) is 6-0-1 in its last seven matches. Cornerstone has allowed 19 goals all season.

Cornerstone will play top-seed Doylestown Chippewa at 2 p.m. Saturday at Magnificat.

Starting at $2.99/week.
