Rebels clinch league share

GARRETTSVILLE — Friday’s game between Crestview and Garfield had major league implications.

Whoever was left standing after the dust settled was going to put themselves in prime position to win the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference’s Gray Tier. In addition to the league title being on the line, last year’s meeting was decided by a point in favor of the G-Men.

Mikey Proctor had 15 carries for 115 yards and four touchdowns to help push the Rebels to a 42-20 victory, maintaining the team’s undefeated record, and avenged last season’s loss.

“I want to tell you it was just like any other game, and that’s how we approached practice, but these guys knew it was a huge game and it was a huge program win for us,” Crestview coach Dominic Perry said.

Crestview –snapping Garfield’s 32-game winning streak in the league — improves to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the MVAC Gray Tier.

Jake Noling helped lead the Rebels with 16 carries for 119 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He completed 6 of 9 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown pass.

The Rebels struck first, handing off to Proctor who scampered 16 yards to score.

The G-Men responded on the ground, giving Ryder Cain the nod, who pounded the ball over the goal line on a fourth-and-1 early in the second quarter.

Crestview closed the second quarter and opened the third with a pair of touchdown carries from Proctor. The senior scored from 5 and 4 yards, respectively.

After a fumble recovery set the Rebels up on the 11-yard line, it wouldn’t take long for Crestview to get back on the scoreboard.

Two plays after the fumble, Rebels quarterback Jake Noling scampered into the end zone.

The Rebels tacked one more on the board in the third quarter, with Noling hitting Ethan Kane with a quick strike in the end zone.

As the clock hit zero, Garfield swung back. Junior Devin Bates bulldozed through the trenches, powering his way 19 yards to paydirt.

Unfortunately for the G-Men, Crestview recovered the ensuing onside kick.

The Garfield defense quickly forced a turnover, however, giving Jack Neikirk and the G-Men defense a short field to work with, and Garfield got creative and capitalized.

Collin McGranahan went through the air, connecting with Colton Miller on a 24-yard pass. Cain got the two-point conversion, and in the blink of an eye, a 35-6 deficit was now a much more manageable 35-20 advantage in favor of the Rebels.

The odds were slim, but Garfield wasn’t going down without a fight.

“I’m proud of their character,” G-Men coach Mike Moser said. “Our kids don’t have any quit in them. We kind of dug ourselves into that big hole, but our kids did a good job trying to fight back out of it.”

On a fourth-and-2 near midfield, Crestview’s defense, which had been bending for much of the final quarter, pushed back, stalling a promising G-Men drive.

Perry credits the scout team for their work in getting Crestview ready for this matchup.

“We actually got old jerseys out and put the numbers of their players on,” he said. “That’s a heck of a program over there. And it’s a tough team to get ready to play, because they move around so much and so many different guys handle the ball. They did a phenomenal job for us this week.”

With four minutes remaining, Garfield (7-2, 5-1) had to stall the Rebels if they wanted a shot.

Proctor had other ideas. The senior broke through the lines and raced 50 yards into the end zone, effectively dashing the G-Men’s comeback hopes.

Garfield looks to get back in the win column, closing its regular season on its home field with a game against Brookfield.

“We need to get back to work tomorrow morning,” Moser said. “Go right back to work tomorrow morning and start getting ready for a good Brookfield team, and we’ll go from there.”

Crestview ends its regular season hosting LaBrae, with hopes of staying perfect.

Starting at $2.99/week.
