Rebels on the march in the MVAC

COLUMBIANA– The Crestview Rebels have made a strong statement this season that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with.

On Friday night, they flexed their muscles once again in a 61-8 dominating victory over the Newton Falls Tigers to remain undefeated on the season.

The Rebels improved to 7-0 overall on the season, and 4-0 in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Grey Tier. The victory also keeps the Rebels on track to meet the Garfield G-Men in two weeks in a battle for first place in the MVAC.

The lopsided win came on the heels of a close victory over Brookfield last week. A contest in which the Rebels admit that they did not play their best, and the Warriors were a better team than their record indicates.

“We had really high expectations to win, and we kind of came in thinking that we were just going to walk through that game. But they gave us a fight,” senior flanker/defensive back Ethan Kane said. “They were way better than we thought they were. So, coming into this week, we knew we couldn’t overlook teams. We played up and did great.”

“Brookfield had a good game plan and came out and played with their A game,” Rebels coach Dom Perry said. “We didn’t hit on all cylinders in that game, so we were a little disappointed coming out of that game.”

But against the Tigers, the Rebels took control of the contest immediately as they scored on their first offensive possession, less than two minutes into the game, and continued to pour it on with their next eight possessions as they built a commanding 54-0 lead at halftime. They added one touchdown in the second half to reach their 61 points in the game. The only time the Rebels’ offense didn’t score was on their last possession with just over two minutes remaining in the game.

“We got back to the basics this week, getting back to fundamental things,” Perry said. “That is what we ran tonight, and I think that helped us out.”

Offensively, the Rebels totaled 597 yards in the game, 475 rushing and another 122 through the air. They accumulated 491 yards just in the first half alone.

Defensively, the Rebels held the Tigers to only 147 total yards, 104 rushing, and 43 passing. The Tigers did not cross midfield until just under seven minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter. They didn’t pick up their first first down until just over five minutes remaining before halftime.

“We wanted a shutout. That was our goal coming into the game,” said Perry. “Our defense flies around the field. We lean on that stuff.”

Sophomore Hayden Davis led the Rebels with 97 yards rushing and a TD, while Mikey Proctor had 80 yards and a score, Wyatt Hart added 78 yards and a TD, and Jake Noling added 59 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Noling also passed for 122 yards and two TDs, hitting on 7 of 11 passes. Kane had three receptions for 36 yards and a TD, while tight end Colton Webber had two catches for 54 yards.

“We challenged them coming into this week that we wanted to see effort on every play, all over the field, and I thought we got that tonight,” Perry said.

The Rebels scored four times in the opening stanza with a 7-yard run by Proctor, a 27-yard pass from Noling to Kyle Booth, a 53-yard scamper by Wyatt Hart, and a 41-yard run by Trevor McElhaney. By the 2:04 mark of the first quarter, the Rebels had already built a commanding 27-0 advantage.

In the second quarter, Noling scored on back-to-back runs. The first being from just 1-yard out, and the second was a 7-yard scamper. Noling then connected with Kane on a 1-yard strike, followed by a 4-yard run by Hayden Davis to reach their 54-0 halftime advantage.

With all their starters pulled and a running clock, the Rebels added a 13-yard run by Brayden Meier to reach their final points on the night at 61. That score came with 2:32 left in the third quarter.

The Tigers continued to play to the end, however, as they scored early in the fourth quarter to break the shutout. Junior quarterback Chace Clonch raced around left end and down the sideline 58 yards to score the Tigers’ lone touchdown on the night with 10:32 remaining in the game.

“The coaches told us to do what we do, and go step by step, and get the job done,” Kane said.

The Tigers will be back in action next Friday when they host the Garfield G-Men. The Rebels will look to continue their undefeated season next Friday when they host the Champion Golden Flashes.
