United Local staying the course in EOAC

HANOVERTON — Led by its outstanding rushing attack, United posted its fifth running clock win and fourth straight in a 49-13 Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference romp over visiting Valley Christian Friday night.

“We’re playing pretty good right now,” said United coach DJ Ogilvie. “Our offensive line does a really nice job and our skill guys out on the perimeter block down field really, really good.”

The Golden Eagles –who clinched a Division VI Region 21 playoff spot with the win — are now 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. The win also moved the Golden Eagles closer to a third straight EOAC crown as they finish the regular season against winless Wellsville and one-win Southern Local.

With the loss, Valley Christian is 3-4 overall and 2-2 in league play.

“We had some adversity over the weekend and seven of our starters weren’t with us, they were suspended,” said Valley Christian coach Aaron Agresta, whose team dressed 24 players. “They knew what they were going up against and the goal was just to execute the game plan and put up the best fight we can. I’m really proud of my team.”

How efficient was United’s rushing attack in the first half?

Consider this: United scored on five of six first-half possessions to race out to a commanding 35-7 lead at halftime. Even more impressive was the fact they scored those 35 points on only 23 offensive snaps.

“Obviously you can’t say enough about United,” said Agresta. “Coach Ogilvie’s a great guy, a God-fearing man who raised a good program up.”

United rushed for 261 yards in the first half and scored five rushing touchdowns on runs of 63 and 3 yards by quarterback Tom Brown, one and 55 yards by running back M’Kyan Haynes and 17 yards by Braden Schwartz. Kicker Liam Jones booted all five first-half PAT kicks.

Valley Christian’s lone touchdown in the first half came on a two-yard pass from quarterback Deion Miller to receiver Dennis Reed.

United finished with 433 yards of offense, led by Brown with his 161 yards in one half of play while Haynes added 95 yards in his one half of action.

“It feels great,” said Brown. “I just try to get around people. I really don’t run through people, I’m not that kind of guy.”

“Tommy’s pretty good, he’s fast and we’ve got a nice group of backs,” said Ogilvie. “It goes back to that we’re physical up front.”

United played its backups in the second half and had scoring runs of 10 yards by Wyatt Swanson and 11 yards by Ayden Bradley in the third quarter.

Valley Christian’s Miller closed the scoring with a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter

United now leads the all-time series with the Eagles, 4-1.

“We’ve got two more left to win our league, that’s our first goal and we’ll see what happens in the playoffs,” said Ogilvie.

United returns to EOAC action next Friday at winless Wellsville.
