Auer helps Oilers win conference

FINDLAY — University of Findlay sophomore and Crestview High School graduate Grace Auer had 15 kills, 10 digs and two aces with a .351 hitting percentage in the Oilers’ 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 win over Northwood on Friday.

Findlay is 22-3 and won the Great Midwest Athletic Conference North title. The Oilers are 22-3 overall and are ranked 25th in NCAA Div. II.

Auer, who was the GMAC volleyball athlete of the week for Oct. 26, has played in 82 sets and has 92 kills on the season with 21 assists and 17 aces.

The Oilers host Thomas More in the GMAC tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday.

Buckeye men dump Notre Dame

COLUMBUS (AP) — Bruce Thornton had 24 points and Christoph Tilly scored 14 of his 18 in the second half, culminating with a drive down the lane for a contested layup with 13 seconds to go that gave Ohio State a 64-63 win over Notre Dame on Sunday.

The Buckeyes had missed 6 of 7 shots after building a six-point lead with 6 1/2 minutes to play but the 7-foot Tilly went strong to the basket, taking one dribble from the 3-point line at the top of the key and scoring over two defenders.

Markus Burton was off the mark on a 3-ipointer as time expired. The Irish shot 1 for 7 in the last 3 1/2 minutes, but the make was a jumper by Braeden Shrewsberry for a 63-62 lead with 2:08 to play.

It was the first game against a Power 4 opponent for the Buckeyes (4-0). Ohio State shot 38% but made 19 of 23 from the free-throw line, including 10 of 13 by Tilly.

Burton scored 14 points for the Irish (3-1), but was 3 of 14 from the field and 8 of 9 from the foul line. Jalen Haralson added 13 points and Shrewsberry scored 11.

Notre Dame shot 47% but was just 12 of 20 from the foul line.

Haralson had 10 points off the bench and the Irish shot 58% to lead the Buckeyes 34-31 at halftime.

An early 18-4 run gave Notre Dame a 21-10 lead midway through the first half. The Buckeyes battled back, despite shooting just 38%.

Notre Dame was up seven when Thornton hit a jumper and a 3-pointer, part of eight straight points for the Buckeyes, and then Tilly made four free throws to complete a 13-2 run that made it 48-46 midway through the second half. It was first lead for Ohio State since the opening five minutes.

UConn dominates Buckeye women

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Sarah Strong had 29 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocked shots and Azzi Fudd added 19 points and seven assists as top-ranked UConn defeated Ohio State 100-68 on Sunday.

Freshman Blanca Quinonez came off the bench to score 18 points and Serah Williams added 12 for the Huskies (4-0).

Jaloni Cambridge had 17 points and six rebounds for Ohio State (2-1), which trailed by only one point late in the first quarter but was outscored 52-27 in the second and third quarters. Strong had 21 points, five assists and four steals during that stretch.
