Mount goes 10-0, gets playoff bye
ALLIANCE — No. 2 Mount Union closed out another undefeated regular season Saturday, rolling past Muskingum 51-7 to finish 10-0 for the 34th time in program history and the ninth straight season.
Both teams scored on their opening drives before the 10-0 Purple Raiders took complete control, piling up 51 unanswered points and dominating on both sides of the ball.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Mikey Maloney accounted for five touchdowns for the third time this season, throwing for three scores and running for two more. He completed passes to three different receivers for touchdowns and added a career-high 76 rushing yards.
Junior receiver Davion Grant posted his second straight 100-yard performance, finishing with a game-high 137 yards and a touchdown. Senior Nick Turner caught three passes for 67 yards and a score, and senior tight end Wyatt Stiehl hauled in a 13-yard touchdown — giving him six touchdowns on seven receptions this season.
Graduate running back Darnell Williams led the ground game with 81 yards and a touchdown as Mount Union outgained Muskingum 500-149 in total yardage, including a staggering 237-1 advantage on the ground.
At halftime, the university recognized its 1985 team, honoring the first Mount Union squad to win an OAC title, reach the NCAA Division III playoffs, win a playoff game and complete an undefeated regular season.
The Purple Raiders earned a first-round bye in the NCAA Division III playoffs on Sunday and will host a second-round game on Nov. 29 at Kehres Stadium. They will host the first-round matchup winner between Muhlenberg and Union (New York) in the second round on Nov. 29.
Mount Union has a 116-22 (.841) record all-time in NCAA playoff games, advancing to the Stagg Bowl 23 times since 1993 with an NCAA-record 13 National Championships.
If the Purple Raiders win their second round contest they will play the winner of the Nov. 29 game between John Carroll and Randolph-Mason on Dec. 6.
