Heartland takes Hoopin’ into the New Year title

COLUMBIANA — Heartland Christian jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 50 seconds and the rout was on.

The Lions ran past Crestview, 91-62, Tuesday in the championship game of Heartland’s fifth annual Hoopin’ into the New Year Tournament. The Lions won the tournament for the third straight year and fourth overall.

They improved to 9-0 on the season and upped their scoring average to 76.6 points a game.

Collin Kalaher led the Lions with a game-high 28 points, raising his career total to 1,031. Isaiah Matthews totaled 20 points, Corbin Seutia 10 and Jack Morgan eight.

Crestview’s leaders were Grant Gerner with 16 points, Tyler Savage 15, Dylan Stoffer 10 and Eli Cope eight.

Kalaher opened the scoring with a layup off a pass from Conaway. Kalaher followed with a steal and layup and had another steal and an assist to Jack Morgan for a layup to give the Lions a quick 6-0 lead.

Isaiah Matthews hit a three-pointer to boost the margin to 14-2 with 3:34 to play in the first quarter.

Reagan Kalaher scored off an offensive rebounds as the Lions built their biggest lead of the first half at 46-30. Crestview closed the gap to 48-39 by halftime.

Heartland led 72-51 through three quarters and the final score was the largest margin.

Both teams return to action Saturday as Heartland hosts Lisbon and Crestview (4-5) entertains Salem.

United 69, Pittsburgh Christian 43

COLUMBIANA — United’s boys basketball team won the consolation game of the Heartland Hoopin’ into the New Year tournament with a 69-43 win over Pittsburgh Christian.

United was up 23-4 after a quarter and 41-14 at the half.

United improved to 6-3 and will be at Southern Local on Jan. 6.

Lakeview 46,

Columbiana 40

CORTLAND — Lakeview held Columbiana to 27 points in the final 25 1/2 minutes and rallied for a 46-40 win Tuesday.

The Bulldogs improve to 5-2, while the Clippers lost their second in a row to fall to 7-2.

Columbiana jumped out to a 13-3 lead with 1:43 to play in the first quarter, but was outscored 43-27 the rest of the way.

The Clippers had their last lead at 17-16 following a Cooper Brown offensive rebound with 3:51 remaining in the second quarter.

Lakeview went ahead 36-23 entering the fourth quarter. Columbiana closed within 47-42 on a Brown three-pointer with 1:12 left in the game, but would get no closer.

Brown hit another three-pointer with five seconds left to close out the scoring. He finished with 22 points.

Isiah Lantz led LaBrae with 19 points. Trace Goyzueta added 12 points, including six in the fourth quarter.

Lakeview also won the junior varsity game, 41-35.

Kaden Gaviit led the Bulldogs with 14 points. Jacob Parks had eight points for the Clippers.

Lakeview will play at Newton Falls on Saturday, while Columbiana hosts Wellsville on Jan. 6.

Laurel 55, Crestview 42

GREENFORD — A night after their biggest win of the season, the Crestview Rebels suffered their first lost.

Division IV state power Shaker Heights Laurel raced out to a 27-2 lead in the first quarter and beat the Rebels, 55-42, Tuesday afternoon at the South Range Holiday Hoops Showcase.

Reese Grammes led the Gators with a game-high 18 points, followed by Jordyn Meyer with 15 and Olivia Schneider 14.

Meyer scored 12 points in the first quarter to give the Gators a commanding 27-2 lead. Crestview outscored Laurel in each of the final three quarters, but could only get as close as 12 points.

Laurel, an Ohio Division IV state semifinalist last season, improves to 8-3. The Gators lost three straight games before Christmas, 60-46 to Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame, 62-61 in overtime to defending Division III state champion Cincinnati Purcell Marian and 54-47 to Twinsburg.

Addison Rhodes topped the Rebels with 16 points and eight rebounds. She was held to seven points in the first half.

Ava Bucey added 13 points and six rebounds and Brianna Baker had eight points, six rebounds and four steals.

The Rebels, which routed LaBrae 62-22 in a battle of unbeatens Monday night, moves to 9-1 on the season. They will play at Girard on Saturday beginning with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. Girard is 6-2 with losses to LaBrae and Salem.
