Old rival up next for Mount

ALLIANCE– Mount Union scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions and powered to a 49-7 win over Muhlenberg on Saturday in the NCAA Division III second round at Kehres Stadium.

The Purple Raiders, which has won 33 straight NCAA opening games, will host former Ohio Athletic Conference rival John Carroll in the national quarterfinals next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 12:02 p.m. on ESPN+.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Mikey Maloney accounted for a career-high six touchdowns, including three rushing scores. He completed 22 of 25 passes for more than 300 yards for the third time this season and added three passing touchdowns.

Junior receiver Davion Grant posted his third straight 100-yard outing — and fourth of the year — with eight catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns. He now leads the Purple Raiders (11-0) with eight receiving scores. Senior Nick Turner added seven receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Graduate running back Darnell Williams topped 100 rushing yards for the fifth time this fall, finishing with 130 on 14 carries. Senior Shaun Thomas added a touchdown and 51 yards on the ground.

Mount Union’s defense limited Muhlenberg (9-3) to 203 total yards. Senior defensive back Kosta Thrasivoulou recorded his team-leading fourth interception, and senior defensive end Kaleb Brown collected his 29th career sack, moving to fifth on the program’s all-time list.

The Purple Raiders outgained the Mules 530-203 overall, including a 225-91 edge on the ground.

Streakin’

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — Now firmly in the North Coast Athletic Conference, John Carroll will get its chance to prove the move from the Ohio Athletic Conference was a wise one after the Blue Streaks dumped Randolph-Macon 35-6 on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks had 448 total yards of offense in the win and the game took 2 hours and 6 minutes to play.

Nick Semptimphelter completed 31 of 33 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns for the winners, while freshman running back Cohen Klimak from Streetsboro totaled 48 yards and a touchdown.

South Range graduate Shane Lindstrom added six catches for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Mount Union ended John Carroll’s season in 2024 with a 42-7 beatdown in the second round of the playoffs.
