Bears keep battling

LISBON — Leetonia suffered a brownout in Lisbon.
Sophomore Sofia Brown scored five points in an 18-second span early in the second quarter to break the game open and put the Blue Devils on their way to 51-16 win Thursday.
The Blue Devils improve to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. The Bears drop to 1-10 and 1-8 in the EOAC.
Brown finished with 13 points. She scored 11 of Lisbon’s first 20 points.
Jayden Smith had a game-high 15 points and Bridgett Newbold added 10.
The Bears led 1-0 with 4 1/2 minutes into the game. After missing their first nine shots, the Blue Devils hit six of their next nine to close the first quarter with a 12-4 lead.
Maddi Klein hit a jumper and then Brown had consecutive layups, the first off a nice pass from Kadence Hood, all in a 25-second span that gave Lisbon a 6-1 lead.
Leetonia pulled within 13-6 on a Hallie Lewis layup with 7:26 to play in the second quarter.
Then Brown went to work, scoring off an offensive rebound, stealing the inbounds pass and connecting on a three-pointer to put the Blue Devils up 18-6 with 6:44 left in the second quarter. Brown added another score off an offensive rebound to up the lead to 20-6.
Leetonia had two field goals and 20 turnovers in the opening 11 minutes.
Lewis and Addison Gray both scored six points for the Bears.
Lisbon also won the junior varsity game, 12-6, in two quarters.
Delaney Pickens led the Blue Devils with 10 points. Olivia Neel had five points for the Bears.
Both teams return to action Monday as Lisbon visits unbeaten Southern Local and Leetonia hosts Valley Christian.

United 69, Wellsville 16
HANOVERTON — The United varsity girls basketball team showed how it was done on youth night.
Maelee Smith, Marin Stryffeler and Reagan Good combined for 54 points Thursday in a 69-6 win over Wellsville.
United improves to 8-6 overall and 6-3 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. Wellsville drops to 0-13 and 0-9 in league play.
Smith totaled a game-high 25 points, 12 steals and six rebounds. Stryffeler hit five three-pointers for 15 points along with three steals. Good had 14 points and five rebounds and Bella Thompson contributed six points, six assists and eight steals.
The Eagles took a 49-6 lead at halftime.
Kenzie Bosco topped Wellsville with eight points, accounting for all of the Tigers’ points in the first three quarters. Brianna Martin added six points, all in the fourth quarter.
Both teams return to league play Monday as United hosts Columbiana and Wellsville entertains East Palestine.

Columbiana 55, Valley 29
YOUNGSTOWN — Columbiana’s girls basketball team was a 55-29 winner over Valley Christian on Thursday.
Evy Rapp had 19 points to lead the Clippers, 12-2 overall and 8-1 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. Columbiana trails Southern by a game in the EAOC standings.
Annah Clemmer chipped in 14 points, while Megan Moser added 11 points.
Columbiana is at United on Monday.
Edison 68, Heartland 27
RICHMOND — The Edison girls’ basketball team stayed undefeated while also celebrating an historic achievement of one of its own.
Edison senior standout Sophia Henderson sank a 3-pointer from the wing with 1:21 left in the second quarter enabling the Muskingum commit to reach the 1,000 point plateau in her illustrious career, and her team went on to defeat Heartland Christian, 66-28, via mercy rule Thursday night in a game played in the gym inside Edison High School.
“It was a very good night,” Edison (12-0) head coach Mark Smyth said. “Our No. 1 goal was to get a win against Heartland Christian team. They are well coached. They are a good team. They are going to do well down in Single-A in the OVAC.
“Our No. 2 goal was to have Sophia get her 1,00th point. The other four girls out on the court with her made sure that happened.”
Abby Carpenter recorded 17 points to help lead the way for the Wildcats.
Kalleigh Shodd collected a team-high 12 points for the Lions, while Kaylin Norbo tallied 11 points — all of which came in the fourth.
Heartland Christian’s Sarah Reynolds was injured with seven seconds left in the first her team trailing just 16-10. Reynolds stayed down the court for a couple of minutes before being carried off the court. She remained by the bench for a few minutes before being carried out of the gym. She did not return to the game.
Heartland Christian (4-7) is slated to play Aquinas Thursday at home.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Southeast 62, Crestview 51
RAVENNA — Crestview’s boys basketball team suffered a 62-51 setback against Ravenna Southeast on Thursday.
Crestview falls to 5-7 and 2-4 in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Gray Division.
The Pirates are 9-2 and 5-1 in the league.
Crestview will be at Brookfield on Tuesday.
