Beaver senior pulls off rare feat

WHEELING, W.Va. – Beaver Local and Ohio Valley Athletic Conference history was made on Saturday at the 72nd annual Ron Mauck Wrestling Championships at WesBanco Arena.

It wasn’t easy however. While still in the midst of recovering from a knee injury, Beaver Local senior Robert Buchheit became the eighth wrestler to win four individual OVAC titles as he won at 150 pounds.

Buchheit also won at 120 as a freshman; 132 as a sophomore and 138 as a junior. He posted a narrow 1-0 victory over Cambridge’s Marshall Laishley in the final. The only point coming on a second period escape.

“I feel a little tired, but it feels great. I just came off of ACL surgery and I cut three months off of my recovery time so I could wrestle here,” Buchheit (10-0) said. “It was a goal, but everything is a goal. My No. 1 goal is to stand atop the podium in Columbus.”

The other seven four-time champions include Bridgeport’s Bobby Douglas, East Liverpool’s Mark Emmerling, Edison’s Kelly Shields, St. Clairsville’s Zack Schuller, Wheeling Park’s Abbie Rush, Martins Ferry’s Clay Tucker and Beaver Local’s Adam Hoppel.

Two other Beavers had championship performances on Saturday as well. Freshman Jordan Bates (21-2) scored a 7-1 decision over East Liverpool’s Kyle Ingram in the 106-pound final. Ingram fell to 24-4 on the season. Bates won his title on the same night that his father, Jake, was honored as a member of the 25th anniversary team. He won at 106 with East Liverpool.

Beaver Local sophomore Jake Hughes (25-3) might be on the same path as Buchheit as he captured his second OVAC title with a pin in 1:57 of University’s Max Vitale at 157.

Hughes also earned the Hercules Award for the most pins in the quickest time. Hughes had four in 6:33.

Wyatt Wolanski (31-4) placed third at 144 pounds to lead Oak Glen who only had two placers in the boys’ tournament.
