Quakers suffer another road loss in EBC play

ALLIANCE — Marlington outscored Salem 22-1 in the fourth quarter for a 71-51 Eastern Buckeye Conference win Friday.

Salem took a 38-30 lead at halftime and a 50-49 lead through three quarters before the Dukes rallied.

Marlington snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 4-11 overall and 2-5 in the EBC, while Salem drops to 3-11 and 0-8 in the EBC.

Cameron Evanich topped the Dukes with a game-high 20 points. Cole Jones added 19 points and Carter Frank 13.

For the Quakers, Ty Manion had 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists and Deontay Steele 16 points and three assists. Jack Andres had four rebounds and three assists.

Salem will host Niles on Saturday, while Marlington entertains Northwest on Tuesday.

HANOVERTON — United handled business in a 62-43 win over Leetonia on Friday in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Gavin Coffee sparked the winners with 18 points, while Jason Pratt added 12 points.

United is 7-7 overall and 5-5 in the EOAC. The Golden Eagles host Southern on Tuesday.

Ethan Mathia had 12 points to lead the Bears (5-11, 3-7 in the EOAC). Leetonia hosts Wellsville on Monday.

United won the jayvee game 38-10. Ryan Miller had 11 points for the Eagles, while Jordan Kidder added eight points.

CARROLLTON –Carrollton outscored West Branch by 11 in the third quarter to pull away for a 61-49 win on Friday in Eastern Buckeye Conference play.

Marcus Brooks had 20 points and six rebounds to lead Carrollton, 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the EBC. West Branch (8-6 overall) suffered its first loss in league play to fall to 7-1 in the EBC.

Gavin Gregoy led Branch with 24 points and six rebounds.

Carrollton won the jayvee portion, 47-31. Brock Woost had 10 points for Branch.

West Branch is tied with Alliance for first place and is at Canton South today.

Heartland 80, Urban Scholars 20

COLUMBIANA — Heartland Christian’s boys basketball team buzzed to an 80-20 win over Youngstown Urban Scholars on Friday.

Heartland (13-4) led 24-5 after the first quarter and 51-12 at half.

The Lions will return to action on Tuesday at Cardinal Mooney.

Liberty 50, Crestview 48

COLUMBIANA — Crestview’s boys basketball team came up short in a 50-48 loss to Liberty on Friday in a Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Gray Division game.

Crestview had an 11-8 lead after the first quarter and was in control with a 20-18 advantage at the half, but the Leopards hung on in a hotly contested second half.

Crestview falls to 7-11 and 3-8 in the league.

Liberty is 3-14 and 3-9 in the league.

Crestview hosts Southeast on Tuesday.

Valley Chrisian 64,

East Palestine 33

YOUNGSTOWN — Valley Christian jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first quarter and pulled away from East Palestine for a 64-33 win Friday.

Jordan Tutwiler led the Eagles with 19 points, followed by Deion Miller and Marvel Hammonds with 10 apiece.

Valley imprvoes to 8-6 overall and 8-3 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference, two games behind league-leading Columbiana.

East Palestine lost its sixth in a row to drop to 1-14 and 1-10 in the EOAC.

The Eagles led 38-15 at halftime and 57-21 after three quarters.

Drew Bycroft topped the Bulldogs with a game-high 21 points, four rebounds and steals. RJ May bad five points, five rebounds and three steals, Clark Rutledge had six rebounds, four assists and three steals, Peyton Rutledge had six rebounds and two steals.

Valley also won the junior varsity game, 35-23. Kealin Simon had seven points for the Bulldogs and Teagan Biser four.

Both teams return to league play Tuesday with East Palestine hosting Leetonia and Valley traveling to Lisbon.
