YSU routs Salem Tigers
YOUNGSTOWN — Getting to the Beeghly Center was just the start of the problems for the Salem (W.Va.) University women’s basketball team on Wednesday.
Youngstown State scored the first 16 points and rolled over Salem, 97-20, in front of 1,292 fans on New Year’s Eve.
YSU sophomore and former West Branch All-Ohioan Sophia Gregory had an assist and two baskets to give the Penguins a 6-0 lead only 64 seconds into the game.
The Penguins led 27-4 at the end of the first quarter and 59-9 at halftime. They widened the margin to 69-9 in the third quarter.
The NCAA Division II Salem Tigers shot 7-of-59 from the field (11.9%), including 1-of-20 from three-point range, with 21 turnovers. Meanwhile, Youngstown State was 39-of-66 from the field (59.1%).
Gregory was 4-for-4 from the field for eight points with six rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals in 21 minutes of action.
Due to wintry travel conditions for the Tigers, Wednesday’s tip-off was pushed back 90 minutes to 2:30 p.m.
YSU (10-4) will host Oakland (Mich.) at 6 p.m. Monday.
