AROUND THE HORN
Midwest is the best
COLUMBUS — The Midwest Athletic Conference ruled the Ohio Division II boys high school bowling tournament Friday.
Three MAC schools reached the semifinals at H.P. Lanes with St. Henry beating Coldwater in a match that went five baker games.
St. Henry had games of 169-212-188-165-180, while Coldwater had had games of 174-179-164-167-168, while
Coldwater led at the end of the individual series with 3,081 pins.
Those two teams share the same home bowling alley, Pla-Mor Lanes, and finished as the top two teams in the state.
Mentor Lake Catholic finished third in the team standings, while MAC member Fort Recovery was fourth.
Brooklyn senior Adam Cowper won the individual state title with a 729 series (235-279-215).
Coldwater sophomore Andrew Myers was the runner-up with a 696 series (223-268-205).
The Division II girls state tournament will be held Saturday with East Liverpool senior Lani Rudibaugh in the field.
Nasatari misses final
INDIANAPOLIS — Penn State junior Kaleb Nastari did not get the finals in Big Ten Indoor Championships at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Nastari, a United graduate who holds Ohio’s high school record in the half mile, finished 16th out of 27 runners in the men’s 800-meter preliminaries Friday.
His time of 1:49.91 was sixth in his heat. The top two each of three heats plus the next two fastest times qualify for the finals Saturday.
Nastari had a career-best 1:47.19 earlier this year.
Penn State senior Allon Clay had the top time in 1:46.31. Penn State runners posted four of the top five times Friday.
On Thurday, Nastari was ninth in the 600-meter preliminaries in 1:17.01. He ran 49.64 seconds on the opening 400.
Penn State senior Niko Schultz posted the top time with a meet-record 1:15.22.
Cavaliers fall in overtime
DETROIT (AP) — Jalen Duren had 33 points and 16 rebounds and the Detroit Pistons outlasted the short-handed Cleveland Cavaliers 122-119 on Friday night in a game that was delayed for 18 minutes in the third quarter because of a blaring horn.
During a timeout with Detroit up 65-64, a power surge caused the overhead scoreboard to malfunction, with the horn remaining on after signaling the teams to return to the floor. Eventually, the scoreboard was shut down to stop the horn and a manual airhorn was used when play resumed.
Cade Cunningham had 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for East-leading Detroit before fouling out.
Cleveland — which will host Detroit on Tuesday night — led by nine points with 2:44 left in regulation, and Cunningham fouled out with 1:56 to play, but the Pistons outscored the Cavaliers 16-7 to force overtime.
With Cleveland up 114-111 with 4.7 seconds left in regulation, Jaylon Tyson tried to intentionally foul Daniss Jenkins near halfcourt, but Jenkins was able to shoot and draw three free throws that he made.
In overtime, Cleveland’s Evan Mobley missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Jarrett Allen had 25 points and nine rebounds for Cleveland, which played its second straight game without James Harden (thumb) and Donovan Mitchell (groin). Mobley had 23 points and 12 rebounds, and Sam Merrill added 20 points.
Because of the delay and overtime, the game lasted 3 hours, 22 minutes.
