Aviators navigate to top of standings

ALLIANCE — Alliance outscored West Branch by five in the third quarter to help the Aviators to the Eastern Buckeye Conference boys basketball title with a 47-38 win on Saturday.

Alliance led 13-9 after the first quarter and 24-21 at the half, but that lead grew to 35-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Alliance moved to 19-2 and 9-1 in the Eastern Buckeye Conference. West Branch fell to 13-7 and 8-2 in the EBC. The Warriors had beaten Alliance in the first meeting in December.

Alliance has won 11 straight games. It shared the title with Carrollton last season and has won four out of the last five EBC titles.

JR Jackson had 24 points to lead the winners.

Jeremiah Thomas sparked the Warriors with 16 point. Landon Coffee added 13 points and seven rebounds.

West Branch shot 36 percent from the floor and committed 17 turnovers.

Gavin Gregory, West Branch’s leading scorer on the season, was limited to two points after battling foul trouble all night.

West Branch won the jayvee game, 39-36. Michael McCartney had 10 points, while Brock Woost added nine for the Warriors.

West Branch hosts Austintown Fitch on Wednesday.

Heartland 66, Frontier 55

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Heartland Christian is pointed into the right direction heading into the tournament.

The Lions repeated as OVAC Class A champions on Saturday with a 66-55 victory over Frontier at the ECO Center.

Just like he did last season, Heartland senior Collin Kalaher was named the MVP as he scored 23 points in the win.

Reagan Kalaher helped him out ith 13 points, while Corban Seuita added 11 points.

Heartland led by four after the first quarter and seven at the half, but Frontier (12-6) cut the lead to four heading into the fourth quarter.

Heartland is 17-4 and will be at Liberty on Friday to complete the regular season.

On Sunday, the Lions earned the No. 3 seed in the Div. VII Northeast district draw. Heartland will host No. 23 seed Lordstown on Feb. 26 in a sectional game in the Northeast 2 bracket. Should the Lions win there, they’ll host the winner of No. 10 Bristol and No. 14 Cornerstone Christian. No. 4 Western Reserve and No. 7 Kidron Central Christian are among the other top teams on the other side of the bracket.

Carrollton 73, Salem 50

SALEM — Carrollton had no trouble with Salem as it scored a 73-50 victory over the Quakers on Saturday in Eastern Buckeye Conference play.

Deontay Steele led the Quakers with 18 points. Jack Andres added 16 points. Ty Manion had 10 rebounds.

Salem is 5-15 overall and finished in last place in the EBC with a 0-10 mark.

The Quakers will host Girard on Tuesday before finishing up the regular season at Lisbon on Friday.

Carrollton is 14-6 overall and 6-4 in the EBC. The Warriors finished in third place behind Alliance and West Branch.
