Branch breezes into district

BELOIT — West Branch doesn’t have to look far for its next tournament opponent.

The fourth-seeded Warriors handled 34th-seeded Akron East, 63-9, in a Division IV Northeast 2 sectional final Thursday to set up another showdown against rival Salem.

West Branch (20-3) will host 21st-seeded Salem at 7 p.m. Tuesday, meeting for the third time in a season for the second straight year. The Warriors own a seven-game winning streak against the Quakers, including win of 41-22 and 46-34 in January.

It will be closer than Thursday’s sectional opener.

West Branch came out fired up against the Dragons and scored the first 32 points.

Alli Kanagy’s three-pointer gave the Warriors a 32-0 lead with 3:27 left in the second quarter.

Akron East’s first two baskets were layups in the final 3:10 of the second quarter as the Dragons trailed 39-4.

West Branch opened up leads of 46-4, 55-5 and 61-6 in the second half.

Akron East finished 4-11 after winning three of its last five regular-season games.

HANOVERTON — Once the United girls got going, they have been tough to stop.

The 17th-seeded Eagles won for the seventh time in eight games by downing 28th-seeded Campbell Memorial, 50-33, in a DivisionVI Northeast 4 sectional final Thursday.

United improves to 15-8 after a 1-4 start. The Eagles will play at third-seeded Richmond Heights (17-5) in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Richmond Heights beat 34th-seeded Wellington, 50-26, Thursday.

Maelee Smith and Reagan Good combined for 41 points and 29 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Smith collected a game-high 28 points, 10 rebounds and five steals and Good totaled 13 points, 19 rebounds and seven steals.

Marin Stryffler contributed a pair of three-pointers and Ines Vilela Rego had seven steals and four rebounds.

Campbell ends the season with a 6-16 record.
