Canfield grabs win over West Branch in overtime

Canfield 42, West Branch 40, OT

BELOIT — Lorieona Jannone’s two free throws with 0.6 seconds left in overtime gave Canfield a 42-40 win over West Branch on Wednesday.

It was the 10th straight win for Canfield, which is 19-2 on the season.

West Branch lost for the second time in five games to move to 16-3.

Jenna Triveri led the Cardionals with 14 points.

Freshman Madi Hoopes topped West Branch with 18 points. Audrey Eaton added 10.

The difference came at the foul line where Canfield was 8-of-9, including 4-of-4 in overtime, while West Branch was 7-of-15.

Canfield led 20-13 at halftime before West Branch caught the Cardinals at 24-24 on a Hoopes three-pointer late in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was back and forth with the Warriors missing a baseline shot to send the game into overtime at 36-36.

West Branch tied the game at 40-40 on a Hoopes steal and layup with 20 seconds to play in overtime.

The Warriors blocked a Canfield shot in the lane, but missed two free throws with 8.1 seconds left.

There was a jump ball off the inbounds pass, giving Canfield the ball with 7.7 seconds remaining.

Jannone, a 65% free throw shooter, was fouled with less than a second to play and made both shots go give Canfield the victory.

Canfield will host Warren Harding on Saturday, while West Branch travels to Howland on Monday.

Crestview 70, Salem 33

COLUMBIANA — Seniors Ava Bucey and Addison Rhodes combined for 50 points in Crestview’s 70-33 win over Salem on Wednesday.

Bucey scored 17 of her season-high 23 points in the first half and Rhodes had 20 of her game-high 27 points in the second half to key the Rebels.

Crestview improves to 18-1, while Salem lost its fifth in a row to drop to 10-10.

Rhodes was 10-for-10 from the foule line with six rebounds, five assists and five steals while holding Salem’s top player, Abby Knickerbocker, to four points.

Brianna Baker contributed nine rebounds and five assists, Bucey and Katie Macay each grabbed six rebounds and Kerrigan Miller made four steals.

The Quakers were led by Maddy Andres with 13 points and five rebounds and Peyton Colbert with 12 points and five rebounds. Karlie Sampson pulled down six rebounds.

The Rebels jumped out to an 8-1 lead with the closest Salem getting after that was a one-point deficit at 9-8.

In the second quarter, Miller hit a three-pointer, Bucey had a three-point play and freshman Karli Perry had a three-pointer and a jumper for a 32-19 lead late in the second quarter. The Rebels led 32-21 at halftime with Rhodes being limited to seven points.

Rhodes highlighted the Rebels’ 38-12 second-half outburst with 20 points of her own.

The junior varsity teams played to an 18-18 tie in two quarters.

Perry played the second quarter after Lainey Milhoan suffered a knee injury and scored eight points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game. Salem’s Ava Lee scored 10 points.

Salem will play at Hubbard today for a varsity-only contest at 6 p.m.

Crestview travels to Austintown Fitch on Saturday beginning with a two-quarter junior varsity game at noon.

Campbell 47, Leetonia 35

CAMPBELL –Campbell Memorial snapped a seven-game losing streak by topping Leetonia, 47-35, Wednesday.

The Red Devils improve to 6-13, while the Bears dropped to 1-18.

Campbell scored the first five points, leading at halftime and 39-21 through three quarters. The Red Devils widened the lead to 47-25 before the Bears finished the game with the final 10 points.

Both teams play Thursday as Campbell hosts Sebring and Leetonia visits Youngstown East.

Conotton Valley 50, Wellsville 10

BOWERSTON –Conotton Valley won its second game in row by downing Wellsville, 50-10, Wednesday.

The Rockets improve to 3-16, winning three of their last eight games.

Wellsville drops to 0-20 heading into Tuesday’s game at Leetonia.
