CLEVELAND — Salem senior Ryan Folger earned his third trip to the Div. II state swimming meet by earning an automatic berth in the 100-yard butterfly on Friday at the district meet at Cleveland State University.

Folger shaved almost 4 seconds off his sectional time to finish third (50.51).

The top three individuals and top two relay teams on Friday earned automatic bids to the Div. II state swimming meet on Thursday and Friday at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Folger also finished seventh in the breaststroke in 1:00.68 and will have a shot at an at-large bid in that event.

On the girls side, United freshman Leighton Birmingham will have a chance at at-large state bids in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley.

Birmingham improved four places from her seed position in the butterfly and shaved 2 seconds off her sectional time to take seventh (1:02.14). She was sixth in the individual medley after shaving 4 seconds off her sectional time (2:15.91).

Full fields for the state meet will be set by Sunday.

ATHENS — Beaver Local junior Cole Long is headed back to the Div. II state swimming mee for a third time.

Long finished second in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.68 to earn an automatic state berth on Friday at the Div. II district meet at Ohio University.

Long also will likely go in the 100 backstroke via an at-large bid as he finished fourth there in 53.61.

The top three boys individual finishers in each event qualified for the state meet set for Thursday and Friday at C.T. Branin Natatorium.

Beaver Local boys’ 400 freestyle relay (fifth in 3:27) and 200 freestyle relay (sixth in 1:35.3) will have an outside chance at qualifying via an at-large bid.
