Quakers bounced in OT

SALEM — Mogadore Field showed of things to come.

Freshmen Paxson Silveus, Mason Fulst and Colton Herchick combined for 50 points as the 27th-seeded Falcons outlasted 22nd-seeded Salem, 62-59, in overtime in a Division IV sectional final Friday.

Silveus scored a game-high 25 points, followed by Fulst with 17 and Herchick with eight.

Deontay Steele and Jack Andres each scored 20 points for the Quakers. Weston Mango added 11 points and Ty Manion eight to round out the scoring.

Field advances to play at fourth-seeded Cleveland Glenville (14-9) in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Glenville beat 25th-seeded Orange, 72-36, Friday.

Salem and Field both entered the game with 7-15 records after 2-9 starts. The game showed how even the teams are.

Field’s largest lead was four points three different times in overtime. Salem’s largest lead was eight points at 25-17 in the second quarter, but the Quakers never led by more than three points in the second half.

Trailing 60-56 in the final half minute of overtime, the Quakers missed but Andres stole a pass and hit a three-pointer to close the gap to 60-59 with 13 seconds to play.

Silveus made two free throws with 8.5 seconds remaining to put the Falcons ahead 62-59. Salem missed a long three-point shot at the buzzer.

It was Field’s win in the last four games.

Silveus and Stelzer hit three-pointers to highlight a Field 11-3 run to end the first half and tie the score at 28-28.

The Falcons led 40-39 through three quarters and Salem caught Field at 50-50 at the end of regulation.

Salem ends the season with an 8-15 record.

BELOIT — Seventh-seeded West Branch took a seven-point lead in the first quarter and beat 21st-seeded Canton South, 44-38, in a Division IV sectional final Friday.

The Warriors improve to 15-8 and will host 12th-seeded Streetsboro (13-10) in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Jeremiah Thomas led the Warriors with a game-high 17 points. Gavin Gregory had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Zach Coffee added seven rebounds and Kasen Weaver had three assists.

Ja’Marcus Jones topped the Wildcats with 14 points.

Canton South ends the season with a 9-14 record.
