United wins first sectional in 41 years

HANOVERTON — A United boys basketball sectional title was four decades in the making.
The 21st-seeded Eagles beat 23rd-seeded Mogadore, 60-55, Thursday for its first sectional championship since 1985.
United improves to 12-10 and will play at third-seeded Smithville (17-5) in a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Monday. Smithville won the Wayne County Athletic League. It will be a rematch of the football playoff game in November when Smithville won at United, 27-26.
Kota Shasteen and Jason Pratt topped the Eagles with 20 and 18 points, respectively.
Pratt scored 11 points in the first quarter, including a trio of three-pointers, as the Eagles jumped out to a 17-11 lead. The Wildcats closed within 31-26 at halftime.
Shasteen scored 15 points in the second half, hitting 7-of-10 free throws, to secure the United victory.
Mogadore lost 14 straight games to finish the season with a 5-17 record. The Wildcats opened the season with a 77-51 loss to Heartland Christian at the Lisbon Tip-Off Tournament.

¯ The 1984-85 United team included longtime West Branch High School principal Brian Coffee in the starting lineup. The Eagles advanced to the Salem district tournament before being beaten by eventual Class AA state champion Youngstown Rayen.
It was Rayen’s ninth of 10 straight Salem district championships.
