Wellsville keeps it in the family

WELLSVILLE — Shawn Carter, the quarterback on Wellsville’s 1994 Division V state runner-up team, is taking over as the Tigers’ new head football coach.

Carter, who works as a chef at Franciscan University in Steubenville, is expected to be officially named at Monday’s board of education meeting.

A 1995 graduate and a member of the Wellsville Athletic Hall of Fame, Carter has extensive coaching experience at Wellsville. He served as an assistant under Derrick Spann from 2016-18, then spenct four seasons as offensive coordinator under Moose Ramsey from 2019-22. He returned as an assistant last fall under Jim Tsilimos.

Tsilimos resigned in December after deciding it was time for a change. The Tigers went 0-10 in his only season at Wellsville.

“The Wellsville Athletic Department is excited to welcome Coach Carter back to the sidelines and looks forward to the leadership, passion and commitment he brings to the Tiger football program,” athletic director Kyle Exline said in a release.

Carter was the quarterback on Wellsville’s 1994 team that went 13-1 and reached the Division V state championship game. Wellsville lost to Versailles, 28-7, at Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. Carter scored Wellsville’s touchdown on an 88-yard run in the third quarter.

A three-year starter and team captain, he guided Wellsville to a 27-7 record in his career, including the first undefeated regular season, first playoff appearance and first Columbiana County football team to reach the state title game.

Carter finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in career passing yards (3,765), passing yards in a season (1,588), career touchdown passes (43), completions in a season (94) and career (212) and tied the record for touchdowns in a season (15).
