Laurel wins first title

DAYTON — The Shaker Heights Laurel girls basketball team beat a pair of state champions on the way to its first state championship.

The Gators won the Division IV state title Friday by topping defending champion Bellevue, 60-58, at University of Dayton Arena, a day after beating defending Division III state champion Cincinnati Purcell Marian, 56-54, in overtime in the semifinals.

Laurel junior and UNVL commit Tristan Williams made two free throws with four seconds left to give the Gators the victory after being state runners-up in 2024.

Williams had 19 points, eight assists, five rebounds and five steals. Sophomore Jordyn Meyer, head coach Dave Meyer’s daughter, scored 21 of her game-high 26 points in the second half. She shot 10-of-15 from the field with six three-pointers.

The game featured 14 ties and 13 lead changes.

Laurel finished with a 22-4 record, including a 53-41 win over West Branch in the regional final last Saturday and a 55-42 win over Crestview in the South Range Holiday Hoops Showcase on Dec. 30.

Bellevue had its 45-game winning streak snapped to end the season with a 29-1 record. Freshman Ava Jakubcin-Theis had a team-high 20 points, including 10-of-10 from the foul line, with eight rebounds and three assists.
