Branch bested by Lions
MINERVA — Minerva made its hits count Thursday.
A day after being one-hit in an 8-0 loss at West Branch, Minerva bounced back with a 4-2 win over the Warriors.
Each team scored one earned run.
Brennan Barnes led the Lions with a double, an RBI and a run. Lane Tarbet and Parker Linkous each had a single and a run. Kolton Almasy also scored a run.
Braydon Wood earned the complete-game victory, scattering four hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks.
Drake Stryffeler led West Branch with two hits, including a triple and a single, drove in a run and scored another. Nick Scofinsky added a hit and an RBI, Carson Wike had hit and Gavyn Webb scored a run.
Evan Springer took the loss, giving up two runs and three hits in four innings. He struck out five and walked three. Carson Wike pitched two innings of hitless relief, giving up two runs with three walks.
Minerva improves to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the EBC, while West Branch moves to 3-2 and 1-1 in the EBC. West Branch will host Howland on Saturday.

WELLSVILLE — Hudson Miller drove in six runs and scored five and Paul Bender scored six runs in leading Heartland Christian past Wellsville, 26-6, in five innings Thursday.
Bender had two doubles and a single and Miller singled twice and doubled. Jacob Goehring drove in five runs as he doubled and singled. Jack Morgan added three runs.
Ethan Morris topped Wellsville with a double.
The Tigers walked 15 Heartland batters and gave up 14 unearned runs.
Heartland (1-3) will play at East Palestine today.
Wellsville (0-4) will host East Liverpool on Saturday.

STRUTHERS — The youthful East Palestine Bulldogs are learning as they go.
Freshman Shane Newman tossed a one-hitter for his first victory and freshman Mason Gorby had three more hits and scored four runs in East Palestine’s 12-1 win over Youngstown Chaney in five innings Thursday at Cene Park.
Newman went the distance, allowing only a leadoff single in the fourth inning with 10 strikeouts and four walks.
After starting his high school career going 0-for-6, Gorby put together eight straight hits to spark the Bulldog offense. He tied the school record by going 5-for-5 against Columbiana on Wednesday and had three straight hits to open Thursday’s game.
Kealin Simon added two hits, including a double, and scored two runs. Brad Bartels added three runs and Luke Kinkead two.
East Palestine, which has no seniors, improves to 2-3. The Bulldogs will host Heartland Christian today.

Leetonia 5, Southern 3
SALINEVILLE — Dominic Lewis’ triple highlighted a three-run third inning to help Leetonia beat Southern, 5-3, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Thursday.
The Bears snapped a nine-game EOAC losing streak to improve to 1-3 overall and in league play.
Southern drops to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the EOAC, leaving United and Columbiana as the only unbeaten teams left in the league.
Jason King and Samuel Falk combined on a two-hitter. King got the win, giving up three runs, two earned, on one hit in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out 11 and walked six. Falk earned the save, allowing one hit and striking out two in 1 2/3 innings.
Mason Pitts took the loss, giving up five runs, three earned, on four hits in seven innings. He struck out 13 and walked six.
Leetonia hosts Wheeling Madonna today, while Southern at Malvern on Saturday.

COLUMBIANA — Ursuline scored single runs in the even-numbered innings to beat Crestview, 3-2, Thursday.
Drew Nemtz got the win in 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. He gave up two hits and struck out one.
Logan Neff started for the Rebels, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits with one strikeout and one walk in 5 1/3 innings. Grant Snyder gave up one hit and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings.
Crestview (4-1) will play at Salem tonight.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Logan Overholt’s RBI single in the bottom of the 12th lifted Abbeville (South Carolina) to a 13-12 win over Lisbon on Thursday.
Ashton Hinchliffe and Logan Sturgeon had two hits and two RBIs each for the Devils. Bryce Esarey had a double and an RBI.
Esarey took the loss with a strikeout and five walks in 1 2/3 innings.
Lisbon is 2-1 and will play Malvern and Mercyhurst Prep today.
