Heartland brings it all together against Blue Devils
Heartland Christian’s Paul Bender runs to third as Lisbon’s Ashton Hinchliffe covers third on Thursday at the Dickey Complex
LISBON — Jacob Goerhring had two hits and drove in four runs to highlight Heartland Christian’s 13-4 win against Lisbon at Dickey Field on Thursday.
The Lions collected eight hits and 14 walks as they improved to 2-6. Lisbon evens its record to 4-4.
Brennen Murray also had two hits and scored two runs for the Lions. Hudson Miller scored three runs, while Paul Bender, Jack Morgan and Abe Cook each had two runs.
Three Heartland pitchers limited the Blue Devils to three singles by Brady Carpenter, Ashton Hinchliffe and Mason Jones. Logan Sturgeon scored two of Lisbon’s runs.
Evan Farrell went the first two innings for the victory, giving up three runs, two earned with one strikeout and one walk. Christian Hamilton gave up one unearned run in 3 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Alex Hamilton pitched 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.
Heartland took a 4-0 lead until the Blue Devils pulled within 4-3 in the second inning as Carpenter hit a two-run single and Devin Kelly walked with the bases loaded. Lisbon could have been down more if not for a running catch to deep center field by Marc Moore to end the first inning and an outstanding play on a grounder by Hinchliffe down the third base line.
Heartland scored six runs in the third inning for a 10-3 advantage.
Three Lisbon pitchers combined for 184 pitches. Starting pitcher Aiden Myers took the loss, giving up four runs, three earned, in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked five. Devin Kelly pitched the next 4 2/3 innings, allowed eight unearned runs with five strikeouts and eight walks. Hinchliffe came in for one inning, giving up one earned run and one walk.
Both teams play today as Lisbon meets United at 4:45 p.m. at Eastwood Field in Niles, while Heartland travels to Jackson-Milton.
