Rebels love drama

NILES — Crestview and Columbiana hooked up for a thrilling rivalry battle on Friday night under the lights at Eastwood Field.

Of course, it went extras.

Crestview staged a dramatic comeback to steal a 2-1 win in the ninth inning on the new artificial turf at the stadium.

Grant Snyder’s sacrifice fly with no outs and bases loaded scored Isaac Unkefer to secure the win for the Rebels.

With two outs in seventh inning and Columbiana up 1-0, Crestview’s Wyatt Ervin hit a long fly ball over Columbiana’s Hunter Davanzo’s head for an inside-the-park home run which tied the game at 1.

An error off a ball hit by Drennen Bosela scored Beckett Wilson for Columbiana’s lone run in the sixth inning.

Unkefer went the first six innings for the Rebels as he struck out four and walked three. Kyle Booth came on for the win as he had eight strikeouts and a walk in three innings.

Avery Young was strong for the Clippers as he had five strikeouts and two walks in 8 1/3 innings. Young threw 100 pitches with 74 going for strikes.

Columbiana (5-6) hosts Girard today.

Crestview (6-3) hosts Champion on Monday.

United 10, Lisbon 0

NILES — United’s baseball team got off to a great start with five runs in the first inning as the Eagles beat rival Lisbon 10-0 on Friday on the new artificial playing surface at Eastwood Field, the home of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

Carter Simmons led the Eagles offensively with two doubles and four RBIs. Nick Lutes had a double and three RBIs. In all, United had five hits.

Kadin Schonauer earned the win with six strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Lisbon was limited to three singles.

Bryce Esarey was the losing pitcher as he was chased after only getting one out in the first inning. Esarey walked four and struck out one while giving up five earned runs. Lisbon pitchers walked 10 Eagles.

United is the lone unbeaten team on the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference slate.

United (8-2, 7-0 in the EOAC) is at West Branch on Saturday.

Lisbon (4-5 overall, 3-1 in the EOAC) is at Chaney on Tuesday.

East Palestine 3

UNITY — East Palestine’s baseball team suffered a 6-3 setback to Lowellville on Friday at Ace of Diamonds.

Clark Rutledge had two of East Palestine’s four hits.

Kealin Simon took the loss with four strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Mason Gorby pitched the final inning, giving up one hit.

East Palestine (2-4) hosts Leetonia on Monday.

Girard 13, Salem 2

SALEM — Girard registered 10 hits in a 13-2 win over Salem in five innings on Friday.

Ben Kuboff had a double and single for Salem. Braydon Van Dyne and Blake Bezon had doubles. Vinny Yannucci had a hit and two RBIs.

Marshall Boron took the loss with a strikeout and a walk in two innings.

Salem is 1-9 and is at Poland on Saturday.

Cardinal Mooney 11, West Branch 0

STRUTHERS — Cardinal Mooney limited West Branch to two hits in an 11-0 win in five innings on Friday night at Cene Park.

Nick Scofinsky and Chase Gee had hits for the Warriors.

Carson Wike took the loss with five walks and no strikeouts over three innings.

West Branch (4-5) hosts United today.
