Salem rallies back but falls to Alliance

Alliance 12, Salem 11

SALEM — Salem rallied from a six-run deficit in the fifth inning to force extra innings before falling to Alliance, 12-11, in eight innings Wednesday.

Alliance improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Eastern Buckeye Conference, while the Quakers drop to 1-4 and 0-2. Salem has scored 36 runs over its last four games.

Bo Davis beat out a grounder for Alliance in the top of the eighth inning and eventually scored the winning run on Lincoln Reese’s single up the middle.

In the bottom the eighth, Bairon Exline got to second base with two outs and Ben Kuboff was called out at first on a long throw by Alliance shortstop Charles Ekey to end the game.

Davis led the Aviators with four hits, two RBIs and two runs.

Exline had three hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs for the Quakers. Jack Andres added two doubles, a single and two RBIs. Braydon Van Dyne drove in three runs with a double and a single.

Exline pitched the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Van Dyne went the last 3 1/3 innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Salem will host Crestview on Friday.

West Branch 8, Minerva 0

BELOIT — Jeremiah Thomas tossed a one-hitter while getting a double and a single in West Branch’s 8-0 win over Minerva in an Eastern Buckeye Conference opener Wednesday.

Thomas struck out nine and walked two. He threw 59 strikes on 84 pitches.

Gavyn Webb tripled and scored two runs and Grayden Grimm collected two hits for the Warriors.

Braydon Wood doubled for Minerva’s lone hit.

West Branch improves to 3-1, while Minerva drops to 2-3.

The teams will play at Minerva today.

Crestview 6, Pymatuning Valley 2

COLUMBIANA — Kyle Booth and Caleb Booth combined on a three-hitter and 11 strikeouts as Crestview topped Pymatuning Valley, 6-2, Wednesday.

Kyle Booth pitched the first four innings for the victory. He gave up two unearned runs on two hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.

Caleb Booth went the final three innings, allowing one hit while striking out four.

Kyle Booth had two hits and Eli Cope doubled. Caleb Booth had two RBIs, Isaac Unkerfer and Wyatt Ervin each scored two runs.

Crestview (5-1) will host Ursuline today.

United 18, Leetonia 3

HANOVERTON — Quentin Taylor drive in five runs and pitched a hitless inning in relief as United knocked off Leetonia, 18-3, in five innings Wednesday.

Taylor hit two doubles and scored two runs. Wyatt Swanson drove in three runs and scored two, Carter Simmons had two hits and two runs and Nick Lutes had a double and two RBIs. Jason Pratt scored four runs, Kadin Schonauer three and Gavin Coffee two.

Simmons was the winning pitcher, giving up one earned run on two hits over four innings. He struck out two. Taylor pitched the last inning with two strikeouts.

United improves to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the EOAC. The Eagles have outscored their four league foes a combined 70-3.

Leetonia drops to 0-3 overall and in league play.

Jaden Rivers drove in all three of Leetonia’s runs. Aiden Hunter had a hit and scored two runs. Benjamin Falk also had a hit and Dominic Lewis a run.

Leetonia will play at Southern today. United travels to Minerva on Friday.

Southern 14, Wellsville 13

SALINEVILLE — Mason Sosack doubled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Southern a 14-13 win over Wellsville on Wednesday.

Sosack had drove in five runs on three hits. Landen Heffner scored four runs, while Zac Mayfield and Preston Pitts each scored two runs.

Wellsville tied the score at 13-13 with three runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Mayfield earned the victory in relief. He got the Indians out of the seventh with one strikeout in one inning.

Ethan Morris had two doubles and scored four runs for the Tigers. Eric Dowling scored three runs.

Morris took the loss, allowing 11 runs, eight earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts and seven walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Southern improves to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. The Indians will host Leetonia today.

Wellsville drops to 0-3 overall and in league play. The Tigers entertain Heartland Christian today.

East Palestine 17, Columbiana 16

UNITY — East Palestine’s bats came alive Wednesday.

The Bulldogs, who had only two runs in their first three games, collected 15 hits in a 17-16 win over Columbiana.

Freshman Mason Gorby had his first hits — going 5-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs

Brad Bartels collected three hits, three RBIs and two runs. Clark Rutledge had two hits and three runs. Steven Telischak drove in three runs.

East Palestine improves to 1-3 overall and in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. Columbiana drops to 2-5 and 1-1 in league play.

Kealin Simon was the winning pitcher, giving up 13 runs, seven earned, on 13 hits with two strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Gorby pitched the last two innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits. He walked two.

For the Clippers, Beckett Wilson and Ethan Lehnerd each had three hits, including a double, and scored three runs. Avery Young had a double, two singles and two runs.

East Palestine will play Chaney at Cene Park at 5 p.m. today, while Columbiana travels to Austintown Fitch on Friday.
