YOUNGSTOWN — West Branch High School graduate and Youngstown State University sophomore women’s basketball player Sophia Gregory announced on Saturday that she is entering the transfer portal.

Gregory followed up her Horizon League Freshman of the Year season with the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year award this season.

“To everyone who has supported me along the way, I am thankful,” Gregory wrote on her Instagram account. “I have so much love for you all. After lots of prayer and reflection, I will be entering the transfer portal. I trust in God’s plan for my future!”

Gregory started in 35 games this season and helped lead the Penguins to the Horizon League championship game. She averaged 28.6 minutes per game while scoring 10.5 points per game. She averaged 8.7 rebounds a game and three assists. She shot 55% from the field and 77% from the line. On the defensive end, she had 1.5 blocks per game and 1.8 steals per game.

In all Gregory has played in 63 games for the Penguins, scoring 654 points in her career.

At West Branch, Gregory had 1,135 points, 655 rebounds, 361 assists and 252 steals.
