Libb, Mount Union at nationals

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — Mount Union’s men’s golf team was tied for 32nd following a weather shortened first round at the NCAA Division II Championship at Mission Resort and Club on Tuesday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders were at +13 before play was suspended due to severe weather, Claremont Mudd-Scripps leads the event at -4.

Freshman Jase Libb, a West Branch High School graduate, was +8 through 12 holes for Mount Union.

Sophomore Vincent Borros and freshman Austin Mariani both played 10 holes before play was suspended, shooting a +4 and +3 respectively. Freshman Austin Wilhoit got nine holes in and was even par through those holes and junior Brian Myers was +6 through eight holes when play was suspended.

The Raiders will resume play Friday morning and continue play for round two.

Forty-three teams and 225 golfers are competing in the tournament.

Guardians 29-4 against Angels at home

CLEVELAND (AP) — Angel Martinez homered and Cleveland’s pitchers struck out 13 as the Guardians kept up their home mastery of the Los Angeles Angels with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night.

Martinez, Patrick Bailey and Bryan Rocchio drove in runs for Cleveland, which improved to 29-4 against the Angels at Progressive Field since 2015. The Guardians have won the first two games in the series despite being outhit twice.

Vaughn Grissom homered for the Angels, who dropped to 8-17 on the road

Cleveland starter Slade Cecconi held LA scoreless for four innings while striking out a season-high seven.

Guardians lose their voice

CLEVELAND — Cleveland Guardians public address announcer Bob Tayek died on Tuesday.

He served in that role for 26 years. At the start of the season, the Guardians said that Tayek would not be on the microphone due to health issues.

“Bob was the voice of Progressive Field, welcoming generations of fans to Cleveland baseball with warmth, professionalism and a presence that became part of the ballpark experience,” the Guardians said in a statement.

“Please keep Bob’s family, friends and all who worked alongside him in your thoughts during this difficult time.”
