Southern thrower qualifies for state

AUSTINTOWN — Southern Local senior Maddy Jones qualified for the state track and field meet with a third-place showing in the shot put on Wednesday with a best throw of 38 feet, 6 1/2 inches at the Div. IV regional meet at Austintown Fitch. Jones hit that mark on her second throw. She fouled on the last three attempts. Norwayne’s Haley Bittinger was first (40-1 1/4) and her teammate Hannah Froelich was second (39-11 3/4).

The top five finishers advance to the state meet set for June 4 through 7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

In the girls high jump United’s Taylor Simmons missed out on an automatic state berth by placing sixth (5-0). Crestview’s Brianna Baker (4-6) was 14th in the event.

Columbiana’s girls 3200-meter relay team of Sidney Schlueter, Sydney Spaite, Maddie Jackson and Kaitlin Brenner was 12th (10:34.11).

In the 3200 run final Schlueter finished 13th (12:38).

In the boys 3200 relay, United’s Cannon Casto, Cole Rininger, Lukas Hamilton and Josh Hawkins was 11th (8:53.7) and Columbiana’s Joyce Zelonish, Peyton Boggs, Eric Hepner and Nolan Clark was 14th (9:17.79).

Hepner also was 10th in the 3200 final (10:31.45).

In the girls 400 dash prelims, United’s Simmons advanced to Friday’s final by taking seventh (1:00.43).

In the girls 100 relay prelims, United’s Brinsley Hiscox came up short of advancing as she was ninth in 16.69. In the 100 dash prelims, United’s Kiley Holmes took 14th in 13.58 and Columbiana’s Camille Jeffries was 15th in 13.62. Jeffries was also 12th in the 300 hurdles prelims (48.57).

In the 800 relay prelim, United’s Kiley Holmes, Ines Vilela-Rego, Hiscox and Simmons was 14th in 1:50.70.

In the 1600 relay prelims, the United team of Holmes, Hiscox, Rby Marshall and Simmons was 13th (4:16.4). Columbiana’s team of Kendra Brown, Evy Rapp, Jackson and Jeffries did not start.

In the 400 relay prelim, Crestview’s Phiatra Bradley, Brianna Baker, Kelsey Houp and Jewlnetta Bradley was 13th (52.92).

In the boys 400 prelim, United’s Cole Billy advanced to Friday’s final by taking seventh (50.85).

In the boys 110 hurdles prelims, Crestview’s Joshua Smith was 11th in 16.49. He did not start in the 300 hurdle prelims.

United’s Mason Laibe took 11th in the 200 prelim (23.24).

United’s boys 800 relay team of Dylan Williams, Billy, Jordan Kidder and Mason Laibe was 16th (1:34.76).

Crestview’s boys 400 relay of Alex Beveridge, Caidyn McElhaney, Smith and Hayden Davis took 13th (45.52).

United’s boys 1600 relay of Laibe, Hawkins, Jordan Kidder and Billy did not start.
