ANDOVER — Southern senior Maddy Jones and United sophomore Taylor Simmons are aiming for more than a district championship.

Both won events at the Pymatuning Valley Division IV district track and field meet Wednesday.

Jones — who qualified for state in the shot put and discus last year and in the discus as a freshman — won the district shot put title with a toss of 37-feet-1 on her first attempt.

Simmons won the high jump by clearing 5-foot-1. She made her first five attempts before missing once at 5-0.

Simmons lost a jump-off for a state berth last year.

She will get another chance next week as the top four in each advance to the Austintown Fitch regional.

Columbiana sophomore Sidney Schlueter became the first area 3200-meter runner to advance in the new schedule.

Schlueter was fourth in a personal-best 12:29.15 for a regional berth. The 3200 run is a final on the first day, a change from it being on the last day.

Columbiana sophomore Eric Hepner also advanced in the boys race. He finished second in a personal-best 10:33.66.

Columbiana advanced both 3200-meter relay teams.

The Clippers’ girls team of Sidney Schlueter, Sydney Spaite, Maddie Jackson and Kaitlin Benner was second (10:37.50) and the boys team of Jayce Zelonish, Peyton Boggs, Eric Hepner and Nolan Clark was third (9:07.73).

The United boys 3200 relay team of Cannon Casto, Cole Rininger, Lukas Hamilton and Josh Hawkins was second (8:56.99).

The Crestview girls 3200 relay team of Bridget Bortchardt, Adri Hodge, Piper Harvey and Savannah Neville was fourth (11:06.61).

The district meet concludes Friday with the remaining field events at 4:30 p.m. and the running finals at 6 p.m.
