Two Lions and a Bear reach state
CUYAHOGA HEIGHTS — Heartland Christian sophomore Claire Liposky and East Palestine junior Braydon Plum made history at the Cuyahoga Heights Division V regional track and field meet Saturday.
Liposky won the discus with a toss of 141-feet-6 on her first attempt — the best by a Columbiana county girl since 2019. She added a 136-8 on her third attempt.
Plum was second in the boys 400-meter dash in a school-record 49.74 seconds. He broke the 75-year-old record of 50.4 seconds set by Earl Herrington in the 400-yard dash in 1951.
The top five finishers in each event advance to the Division V state track meet June 4-5 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
East Palestine is sending three boys to the state meet after all ran personal bests.
Junior RJ May was third in the 300 hurdles (41.06) and junior Landyn Cope was fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.59).
Cope beat out Mapleton junior Tristan McQuerry by .002 seconds for the final state berth.
It wasn’t as close for Leetonia sophomore Graydon Henderson, who was fourth ahead of Cope in 16.52 seconds.
Heartland Christian senior Rebeca Geiss was second in the 1600 run (5:08.33), trialing only defending state champion Kaitlyn Carr of Smithville. The two finished in the same order in the 3200 run finals on Thursday.
