Hopple, Stephens lead a Salem sweep

SALEM -- The 24th annual Salem Early Bird Cross Country Invitational belonged to the hometown team.

The Salem boys and teams regained the team titles after finishing second last year and senior Luke Stephens and sophomore Addison Hopple won their individual races.

The Salem boys had five of the top nine finishers to win with 22 points.

Stephens won the 146-runner boys race, covering the 3.1-mile course at Waterworth Memorial Park in 16 minutes, 56.2 seconds.

Right behind him for the Quakers were junior Alex Rea in third, junior Colton Hall fourth, senior Jackson Dowd seventh and freshman Taven Tice ninth.

It was much of the same in the girls race with five Quakers finishing in the top 11.

The Salem girls scored 27 points to run away with the team title.

Hopple won in 19:30.6, her first time under 20 minutes. She was followed by senior Emily Sinsley in third, sophomore Chaya Murray fifth, junior Liliana Pimentel-Alexander seventh and senior Cassidy Wallace 11th.

All five ran at the state cross country meet last year in leading the Quakers to a sixth-place finish in Division III .

The Quakers will run at the fast Trumbull County Fairgrounds in the Oscar Grant Invitational on Thursday.
