Quakers drop Howland

SALEM -- The Salem volleyball team scored the final six points of the first game and rolled over Howland, 25-22, 25-21, 26-24, Thursday.

The Quakers trailed 22-19 in the first game and 24-22 in the third game before rallying to victory.

The Quakers (2-0) are scheduled to play at Niles on Saturday.

Beaver 3, Buckeye 0

CALCUTTA -- The Beaver Local volleyball teams made it a clean sweep against Buckeye Local in Thursday’s season opener.

Beaver Local won the varsity match, 25-16, 25-17, 25-14.

For the Beavers, Addie Thurik had 14 kills, three aces, 12 assists and eight digs; Gianna Congrove three aces and nine digs; Leah Schrieber five kills, two assists and eight digs; Lily Schrieber 12 kills, two aces, seven assists and seven digs; Madison Poppelriter four kills and four digs; McKinnley Ferry 13 assists and seven digs; Taylor Pease 10 digs.

In junior varsity action, the Beavers won 29-27, 25-15. Katie Miller had six kills and three digs for the Beavers, while Maddie Smith had three kills, 13 assists and five digs; Maddie Gaydos 13 digs; Jess Layman four kills and two digs; Makayla Jungfleisch four digs.

Beaver Local also won the freshman match, 25-10, 25-8, as Kylie Gbur had seven kills, four assists and four digs; Daisy McKnight four kills, one ace and three digs; and Ella Watson four kills and seven digs.

The Beaver Local freshmen travel to Canfield at 4:30 p.m. Monday at 4:30. The junior varsity and varsity will play at Minerva at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
