SNELL TO START TUESDAY
PHOENIX (AP) -- Two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell is expected to make his return from the injured list when the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.
Manager Dave Roberts also said Friday that recently-acquired lefty Tarik Skubal will make his home debut on Monday, also against the Royals.
The 33-year-old Snell has started just one game this season. The left-hander began the season on the injured list with shoulder fatigue, returned for one outing on May 9 against the Atlanta Braves, and then went back on the IL because he needed surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow.
Snell has missed significant time with injuries over the past three years, making just 32 regular-season starts. But he had a crucial role during the Dodgers’ run to a second consecutive World Series title last season, striking out 41 batters over 34 innings with a 3.10 ERA.
Skubal -- the two-time defending Cy Young winner in the American League -- was dealt to the Dodgers from the Detroit Tigers in a trade deadline blockbuster last week. He made his first start on the road against the Chicago Cubs, giving up two runs over six innings in a 5-1 loss.
The Dodgers have lost a season-high six games in a row going into Friday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
ALYSSA THOMAS HAS NUMBER RETIRED
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) -- Alyssa Thomas was the engine that made Connecticut go when she played for the Sun for 11 years.
The franchise that she helped reach two WNBA Finals and six consecutive playoff semifinals honored her on Friday night, retiring her No. 25 jersey. The team is moving to Houston next year, so the Sun have been honoring many of their former great players and coaches this season.
Thomas was serenaded pregame with chants of “AT” from the crowd, which also gave her a standing ovation when the short ceremony started.
“What a heck of a ride we had here. This place truly meant something to me,” Thomas said to the crowd. “It was a great 11 years. Sad to see it go. I will never forget the memories, the hard fought battles we had here. Bottom of my heart thank you. I love you guys.”
Thomas left Connecticut for Phoenix after the 2024 season. She was the heart of Connecticut after the team got her in 2014 in a trade on draft night that was held at The Mohegan Sun.
TECH SIGNS TWO GRANTED EXTRA YEAR
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Darrion Williams has signed with Texas Tech to play a fifth season of college basketball, taking advantage of a recent court ruling that granted some players one more year of NCAA eligibility. He is returning to the Lubbock campus after being North Carolina State’s leading scorer last season.
The Red Raiders on Friday announced the signings of Williams, a 6-foot-6 forward who previously played for them from 2023-25, and 6-8 transfer forward Jamichael Stillwell from UCF.
Williams and Stillwell were both high school class of 2022 athletes who became eligible for a fifth season after a U.S. District Court judge in Colorado last week ruled that all players in that class who exhausted their fourth season of college eligibility this spring are eligible for a fifth season this school year. The NCAA is expected to appeal that wide-reaching preliminary injunction after a group of current players sought to be part of the NCAA’s new ‘five for five” eligibility rule approved in June.
After playing as a freshman at Nevada, Williams averaged 13.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game over his two seasons at Texas Tech. He was NC State’s leading scorer with 14.0 points per game last season, when he also averaged 4.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Williams has played in 133 games the past four seasons, starting 130 of them.
Stillwell averaged 11.6 points and 8.1 rebounds last season for fellow Big 12 team UCF. He first played two junior college seasons, then averaged 13.0 points and 10.7 rebounds with Milwaukee in 2024-25 before going to UCF, where last season he averaged 11.6 points and 8.2 rebounds.
DRUGS PLAYED ROLE IN CLARKE DEATH
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke died in May from the effects of heroin and cocaine, authorities said Friday.
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner said the 29-year-old basketball player’s death was accidental.
Clarke was found dead inside a home near Los Angeles on May 11. A person familiar with the terms of the investigation told The Associated Press after the Grizzlies announced Clarke’s passing that drug paraphernalia was found at the residence. The person had spoken on condition of anonymity because those details had not been released publicly.
Clarke was under contract to be with the Grizzlies through the 2026-27 season.
About six weeks before he died, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas on charges of speeding, reckless driving and possessing a controlled substance. He was with Memphis for all seven of his pro seasons after finishing his college career at Gonzaga.
