ZANESVILLE -- Beaver Local freshman Eli Stewart punched his ticket to the Div. II boys state golf tournament by winning the district tournament on Monday at EagleSticks Golf Club.
Stewart shot an even-par 70 with 33 on the front nine and 37 on the back nine. Stewart was one of two individuals not on a qualifying team to make advance to state. The other was Fort Frye’s Tanner Archer with a 72.
St. Clairsville (293) and River View (298) were the two team qualifiers.
The Div. II state tournament is set for Oct. 11-12 at Firestone Country Club in Akron.
LIONS ADVANCE
HOPEWELL -- The Minerva girls golf team captured its second straight district title Monday, winning the Division I district at Crystal Springs Golf Club west of Zanesville.
The Lions posted a second straight unbeaten season after finishing 12th at state last year.
Minerva had three of the top six finishers in the 48-golfer field.
Junior Peyton Beaumariage led the way by placing second with an 18-hole score of 76, two strokes behind medalist Maggie Evans, a Warren sophomore.
Minerva shot a 345 for a state berth. The Lions finished eight strokes better than runner-up Marietta in the eight-team field.
Also for the Lions, sophomore Emery Sell was fourth (82), senior Delaney Sell was sixth (88), junior Tempi Muck was 22nd (99) and sophomore Savanna Bartley was 24th (100).
Beaver Local sophomore McKenzie Ash was seventh (90) and Beaver Local junior Brenna Jones was 19th (97).
The top team and top individual not on a qualifying team advance to the state tournament, which will be held Oct. 12-13 at NCR Country Club in Kettering.
