Golden Eagles seeing good returns

HANOVERTON -- United looks like it’s a force to reckon with in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference.

For the second straight week, the Eagles played the entire second half with a running clock after a 55-7 win over Lisbon on United’s homecoming.

United (4-1, 2-0 in the EOAC) rushed for 336 yards in a game which featured rare back-to-back kick-off returns for touchdowns.

“That’s pretty cool, the two back-to-back kick-off returns,” Ogilvie said. “Obviously it was nice to bounce back when we gave them one touchdown.”

Lisbon’s Wyatt Newbold raced 95 yards for the Blue Devils’ lone score with 4:11 left in the first quarter. On the next kick-off United’s Jordan Kidder went 80 yards for the Golden Eagles.

“(Newbold) is a tough kid,” Lisbon coach Bill Meek said. “You look at him and you think, oh that’s a little guy but he can go.”

United’s starting offense only had two quarters to work through again this week, but the load was spread out. Rohan Kelly had 59 yards rushing including a 31-yard run that set up the first score and an 8-yard touchdown run. M’Kyan Haynes led the team with 69 yards rushing and touchdowns on 1 and 24 yards. Austin Ceresna totaled 42 yards on the ground and had a 4-yard touchdown. Quarterback Tom Brown was not called on much to do work with his feet, but did have a 66-yard touchdown pass to Kota Shasteen.

“We all love each other,” Kelly said. “If say Austin gets a big run, I feel the same energy if I get a big run.”

Ogilvie said the running attack was made possible by the line.

“It’s a tribute to our offensive line,” Ogilvie said. “I said all week that was going to be the key to our game.”

United had 17 carries for 206 yards in the first half, while Lisbon had 21 carries for 48 yards. Lisbon standout quarterback Grant Minor tried to make things happen with his legs and short passes but long, sustainable drives disappeared after the first quarter. United’s substitutes ran for 130 yards in the second half with Brayson Fisher and Anthony Martin having long touchdown runs.

Lisbon coach Bill Meek calls the current United team the best team the Devils have played in the last 10 years.

“It was a David versus Goliath situation,” Meek said. “They’re well coached and you can tell they work really hard year-round. We’ve got to get to that. If we don’t we’ll have the same type of situations.”

Lisbon fell to 2-3 and 0-2 in the EOAC.

United will be off next week unless something comes together over the weekend. The Golden Eagles are the only team in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference that has not filled the spot vacated by Leetonia on the schedule. Ogilvie has a target for a last minute opponent possibility to play a game at United, but was still negotiating on Friday.

If the Eagles don’t get to play on Friday or Saturday than the the team will get a day off on Wednesday.

“We’ll let them get their legs back and get a little refreshed,” Ogilvie said. “When I was in Florida you always had a bye week and I loved it. It was great for the kids to get recharged.”

NOTES

• An official had a medical emergency which required him to be transported to a hospital by a helicopter. The official went to Lisbon’s bench in the first quarter and was looked over by on-site medical personnel. With 7:17 left in the second quarter, the entire officiating crew escorted the official to an ambulance. Another ambulance arrived later in the second quarter before the helicopter landed on the Eagles’ practice field just before halftime. After about 20 minutes on the ground, the helicopter took off again and flew over the home side stands just as the teams were coming out for warm-ups.

• Lisbon won the “Clash of Cans” with 2,342 canned goods collected.

• Chloe Angelo was named the homecoming queen. Golden Eagle lineman Jacob Burton was the homecoming king.

• Lisbon has a game on Saturday next week against Valley Christian at Mineral Ridge.

• United is 20-3 against Lisbon since 2004.

• Meek said a skin infection was going around the team and half the team did not practice during the week.

• Lisbon is at Valley Christian next Friday.
