SALEM STREAK ENDS
EAST LIVERPOOL -- The East Liverpool volleyball team snapped Salem’s six-match winning steak, 25-19, 26-24, 25-13, Saturday at the Potter Fieldhouse.
East Liverpool improves to 7-1 heading into today’s match at Harrison Central.
Salem moves to 9-2 and will travel to West Branch on Tuesday for a battle of Eastern Buckeye Conference unbeaten.
Kendall Martin led the East Liverpool attack with 17 kills. Addie Jones added six kills, Addi Smith four kills and Addison Boyle three kills. Cameron Conley collected four aces and 19 assists, Peyton Tanner three aces and nine assists and Hailey Board and Taylor Loedding each served three aces.
Salem won the junior varsity match, 25-22, 25-17.
For the Potters, Katelyn Reeder had six kills, Ella Gunning seven assists and Kennedy Talbot two aces and two kills.
DELAY OF GAME
WOOSTER -- Columbiana went to the Wooster Cross Country Invitational but never ran Saturday.
They arrived and were warming up when it started to thunder and rain.
The first three races had been completed, but the final seven -- including Columbiana’s -- were canceled due to weather.
DESHIELDS LEADS KENT
KENT -- Dru DeShields threw for a touchdown and ran for two more scores, and Kent State dominated the second half for a 36-15 win over FCS Wofford on Saturday.
The Golden Flashes (1-1) put together three long drives and outscored the Terriers 22-0 in the fourth quarter.
DeShields, who was an All-Ohioan at West Branch, was 16-of-25 for 248 yards with two first-half interceptions and ran for 74 yards on 10 carries.
DeShields and the Golden Flashes will play at Ohio State at noon Saturday.
RAIDERS WIN AT END
ALLIANCE -- This weekend the Mount Union football team came out on top of a close game.
Junior Mason Ashby hauled in a 21-yard pass from Mikey Maloney for his first career touchdown with 12 seconds to play to lift Mount Union over Grove City (Pa.), 21-17, Saturday in front of 2,056 fans at Kehres Stadium.
The completed a 70-yard drive with 45 seconds left in which Maloney was 4-of-7 passing for all 70 yards.
Ashby had five catches for a career-high 100 yards.
Maloney was 18-of-31 passing for 247 yards and two touchdowns, but five interceptions.
In the season opener last week, the Purple Raiders had an extra point blocked with 22 seconds tho play as Wheaton (Ill.) held on for a 24-23 win.
Mount Union (1-1) will kick off Ohio Athletic Conference play by hosting Heidelberger at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
FIELD FLOODS
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College football team stormed visiting Keystone on Saturday.
The Presidents led 42-0 before being suspended at halftime due lighting and the game was eventually called after Cameron Stadium flooded.
First responders in emergency gear escorted fans in knee-high water to their cars.
