SUBURBAN LEAGUE
CANFIELD -- Columbiana will host a Suburban League cross country meet today at the Youngstown State University course across from the Canfield Fairgrounds.
Parking is free at the fairgrounds. VIP parking is available for $10 at the Mill Creek MetroParks lot.
The meet was moved to Canfield due to construction behind Columbiana High School.
Sixteen schools will compete, including host Columbiana, Beaver Local, Crestview, East Liverpool, East Palestine, Heartland Christian, Leetonia and United beginning at 4:45 p.m.
STATE RANKED
COLUMBUS -- South Range and Canfield received high rankings in the first state poll of the season released by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association.
South Range (10-0) is ranked fourth in Division V. The Raiders topped Youngstown Ursuline in four games Monday and have lost only three games this season. They will host 8-2 Lakeview tonight.
Canfield sixth (9-1) is ranked sixth in Division IV. The Cardinals dropped three games in their nine wins before a 3-1 loss at North Ridgeville on Saturday.
Crestview (6-1) also received votes in Division V. The Rebels have won six straight matches since a season-opening loss to East Liverpool. The Rebels play at Champion tonight.
GECINA TOPS PAC
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College junior libero Brooke Gecina has been named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Gecina totaled 105 digs to average 7.00 digs per set across the Titans' 2-2 weekend at the Penn State Behrend Invitational.
She had a season-high 34 digs in Saturday morning's 3-1 victory over Fredonia State before adding 22 digs against Muskingum. She leads the conference with an average of 6.13 digs per set.
Gecina, the daughter of former Crestview High School standout Brian Gecina, was the a two-time team MVP at Aurora High School.
The Titans (5-4) will play at Mount Union at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
CLEMENTE DAY
PITTSBURGH -- Roberto Clemente Day is always special for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Players, coaches, staff and members of the Clemente family will be participating in volunteer projects around the city today to honor the life and legacy of “The Great One.”
Clemente was a 15-time All-Star for the Pirates who didd in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
All the Pirates will wear Clemente’s No. 21 when they host the Milwaukee Brewers at 6:40 p.m. today. The first 21,000 fans will receive a Clemente bobblehead.
There will be a first pitch by Clemente’s son, Luis, along with his grandson, Roberto Clemente III.
SMITH NEARS RECORD
COLUMBUS (AP) -- Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith caught eight passes for 164 yards and a touchdown in the Buckeyes’ 24-23 loss at Texas.
Smith, who had a combined seven catches for 46 yards in two previous meetings with the Longhorns, had a pair of 43-yard receptions while amassing the second-most receiving yards in a game in his career.
Smith has 2,873 career receiving yards and goes into Saturday’s game against Kent State needing 26 to break Michael Jenkins' record of 2,898 from 2000-03.
CLIPPERS TOP QUAD
SALEM -- Columbiana came out on top of a quad match Monday at Salem Hills.
The Clippers shot 167, followed by Salem 195, East Palestine 209 and Lisbon 214.
Columbiana had the low three scorers as Trenton Hall had a 40 and David Masters and Nick Klindworth had 41s. Nolan Clark added a 45.
For Salem, Eli James had a 43, Donald Blackburn 48, Caden Arcuri 49 and Audrey Beck 55.
For East Palestine, Olivia Magness had a 50, Hunter Hupp 51, Luke Kinkade 52 and Shane Newman 56.
For Lisbon, Mason Jones had a 44, Logan Sturgeon 48, Naomi Aeschbacher 57 and Kenley Weikart 6.
Salem will play in the Eastern Buckeye Conference Tournament at Pleasant View at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
WARRIORS WIN
BELOIT -- The West Branch girls tennis team swept the doubles matches and topped Alliance, 3-2, in Eastern Buckeye Conference play Monday.
The Warriors improve to 5-6 overall and 4-2 in the EBC. They will host Austintown Fitch at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Pop superstar Taylor Swift was back at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night, and sitting alongside Tom Cruise, to watch new husband Travis Kelce and his Kansas City Chiefs open the NFL season against the Denver Broncos.
It was the first time Swift has seen Kelce play since they were married over the summer.
The 14-time Grammy Award winner decided to skip the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, though it wasn’t necessarily a big surprise. Even though “The Eras Tour: The Final Show” was nominated for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded), the category winner already was announced at the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month, with “The Muppet Show” taking top honors.
