SCOTT STEPS DOWN

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- After 24 years as the Westminster College women’s basketball head coach, Rosanne Scott is stepping away from coaching and transition to the position of Assistant Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA).

Scott led Titans to 279 victories. She guided Westminster to three 20-win seasons and berths in the NCAA Division III tournament in 2005 and 2007. The 2005 team won the program’s only Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Hired in April 2002 at just 24 years old, Scott was the youngest collegiate basketball coach in the country at any level.

Scott is a 1996 graduate of Struthers High School, where she starred for coach John Hritz.

Former Austintown Fitch High School standout Megan Sefcik is taking over as interim head coach. She has been a member of Scott’s staff since the 2019-20 season.

SAUCE BOILS

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner was his own worst critic on Wednesday.

His self-critique was even harsher than the outsiders he says he tunes out.

The two-time All-Pro repeatedly used the word “embarrassing” to describe the game tape he broke down after last weekend’s 30-13 victory over Washington, acknowledging neither his effort nor his pursuit to the ball were good enough and promising it would never happen again.

“It was an embarrassing watch, and it was just, you know, hard to look back at that tape,” Gardner said. “It was like my effort. When the ball is on the other side (of the field), it was like embarrassing, an embarrassing watch, an embarrassing feeling.”

Gardner has heard plenty of assessments of his play since the New York Jets drafted him No. 4 overall in 2022 and again after the Jets sent him to the Colts for two first-round draft picks just before last year’s trade deadline.

While injuries ruined his first season in Indy, this time the problems were too obvious to ignore.

Gardner gave up two big plays in the game and also drew a penalty on a third down stop that extended a Commanders drive.

BECKHAM SIGNS

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Vikings signed wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to their practice squad on Wednesday, adding some skill position depth and experience for their lagging offense.

Beckham, the 2014 Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year award winner, made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three NFL seasons with the New York Giants. He has 7,987 receiving yards and 59 touchdowns over 122 career regular-season games in the league.

The Vikings (4-0) rank last in the NFL in passing yards. Top wide receiver Justin Jefferson missed the last game with a sprained ankle.

Beckham’s return this year to the Giants at age 33 after being out of football in 2025 lasted three games, with just one target and no catches. Beckham served a six-game suspension last year for failing a performance-enhancing drug test and did not sign with a team after that.

Traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2019, Beckham joined the Los Angeles Rams midway through their 2021 Super Bowl championship season. He played there for current Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, who was offensive coordinator of the Rams.

QUICK START

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Tom Wilson had a goal and two assists, and the Washington Capitals held on for a win in Alex Ovechkin’s final home opener, 5-3 over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.

Anthony Beauvillier, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Alex Tuch and Ryan Leonard also scored for the Capitals, who introduced their roster one by one before the game, saving Ovechkin for last. The Russian star’s two kids handled that announcement, and the crowd gave a standing ovation.

Ovechkin announced earlier in the week that this season would be the last in the NHL for the league’s career leader in goals.

Bryan Rust, Tommy Novak and Nick Robertson scored for the Penguins, who nearly rallied from a 4-1 second-period deficit.

This is the 22nd straight season Ovechkin and Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby have played against each other at some point. Only one forward duo in NHL history has clashed in more consecutive seasons: Mark Messier and Ron Francis, who played each other in 23.

Crosby was on the ice for every Washington even-strength goal, finishing with a minus-4. His only career minus-5 was March 6, 2014, at San Jose.

Beauvillier opened the scoring for Washington after just 23 seconds. The Penguins needed less than a minute to tie it on Bryan Rust’s goal from in close.

PENGUINS TRADE

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Spencer Stastney from Edmonton in exchange for forward Filip Hallander.

The deal, announced Wednesday, gives the Penguins depth on the blue line.

Hallander, 26, was off to a promising start this season for Pittsburgh, scoring a goal to go with two assists in two games for the Penguins. The former second-round draft pick has struggled to gain a foothold in the NHL during his time in Pittsburgh, appearing in just 18 games across four seasons.

The Penguins will be Stastney’s third team in less than a year. He was traded from Nashville to Edmonton last December, then signed a one-year deal with the Oilers in July.

The 26-year-old Stastney has four goals and 15 assists in 117 career games for Edmonton and Nashville.
