CANFIELD -- The Presidents’ Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm.

There are 262 college runners entered in the two races.

The women’s 6,000-meter race will be at 11 a.m., followed by the men’s 8,000-meter reace at noon.

Teams entered are Geneva, Washington & Jefferson, Bethany, St. Vincent, Franciscan, Westminster, Hiram, Allegheny, Waynesburg, Grove City, Thiel, Chatham and Saint Francis.

COLTS DEALING

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Quenton Nelson made an All-Pro impact right from the start for the Indianapolis Colts.

The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks think he can do the same thing for their struggling ground game.

One week after team co-owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon fired general manager Chris Ballard, who drafted Nelson with the No. 6 overall pick in 2018, Nelson was dealt to the Seahawks for two draft picks -- the first of two trades Tuesday. Indy received a 2027 third-rounder and a 2028 fifth-rounder for Nelson.

A few hours later, the Colts sent Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to San Francisco, the team announced. Indy will receive a 2027 fourth-round pick.

While the timing may come as a surprise, Irsay-Gordon telegraphed this was a possibility in her statement last week.

“As I said at the start of the season, the sense of urgency has never been higher. Our standard is to compete for championships, and I believe a change in leadership is necessary to meet that standard,” she said. “Making this change during the season was a deliberate decision. Waiting would only delay the important work that needs to begin now.”

WOLFPACK STRONG

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- These are unusual days for former N.C. State coach Dave Doeren.

He isn’t sure exactly what comes next after he was fired over the weekend midway through his 14th season. It brought an abrupt end to a tenure that saw him become the program’s all-time winningest coach, yet be unable to make a breakthrough leap to higher success.

And that has completely changed the football-centric routines of fall that Doeren has followed since he started playing football in the fourth grade.

“I’ve coached 32 years, and I’ve never been unemployed,” Doeren said Tuesday, appearing via virtual news conference to make his first comments since the firing but declining to take questions from reporters.

“So these last few days in October, waking up with an empty calendar, with no alarm clock has been very different - to wake up on a Monday morning and not be thinking about the next game or the last game or what’s going on, never in my life.”

Doeren, 54, said he was excited to spend “some down time with some damn good people” of friends and family.

“Sara and I will be cheering for N.C. State forever,” Doeren said of his wife. “I leave here with no grudges. I completely love this place, and we want to see this program shock the world.

“I might be in the mountains somewhere, sitting in a river fishing or at the lake. But I’ll always be cheering for the Wolfpack, I promise you that.”

FEEL THE PAIN

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Beginning a lengthy letter to fans with “I hear you. I understand your frustration,” Florida State President Richard McCullough provided an out-of-the-ordinary update Tuesday on the school’s search for an athletic director and the state of a floundering football program.

The Seminoles are 3-4, including 1-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, heading into Saturday’s home game against Clemson (4-3, 2-2).

“We are not asking you to lower your expectations,” McCullough wrote. “We are telling you that we share and embrace them. We are not asking you to ignore the results. We are committed to changing them.”

McCullough and board of trustees chairman Peter Collins named Bruce Warwick as the interim athletic director.

McCullough wrote Tuesday that FSU is closely examining the structure of its athletics leadership. He said the search for an AD will begin soon.
