OBETZ — Beaver Local seventh-grader Samantha Williams won at the OHSAA 7th & 8th Grade State Cross Country Championships on Sunday. She topped the 408-runner field in the Division A Championship girls race, covering the 2-mile course at Fortress Obetz in 11 minutes, 13.9 seconds. Quakers, Warriors secure first round byes

Six area high school football teams have secured spots in the playoffs. Salem (8-2) earned the fourth seed and a first-round bye in Div. III, Region 9. The Quakers are coming off a 50-0 loss to West Branch and will host the winner of No. 12 University School (6-4) and No. 5 Cleveland Glenville (8-2) at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6 at Sebo Stadium. CANTON — Columbiana's girls cross country team finished first in Div. IV on Saturday at the district cross country meet at Canton GlenOak High School. The Clipper girls were one of six teams to qualify in Div. IV for next Saturday's regional meet in Boardman.
