Southern thrower qualifies for state

AUSTINTOWN — Southern Local senior Maddy Jones qualified for the state track and field meet with a third-place showing in the shot put on Wednesday with a best throw of 38 feet, 6 1/2 inches at the Div. IV regional meet at Austintown Fitch. Jones hit that mark on her second throw. She fouled on the last three attempts. UNITY — No. 13 seed Bristol rallied for five runs in the seventh to force extras and scored two in the eighth to dump No. 9 Heartland 8-6 on Wednesday in a Div. VII district semifinal.
