RAIDERS SEASON COMES TO AN END
AKRON -- South Range’s softball team saw its season come to an end with an 8-1 loss to Liberty Union in the Div. V state semifinals on Saturday at Firestone Stadium.
The Lions scored six runs in the in the sixth to pull away.
South Range (23-8) stranded 11 runners.
Wheelersburg won the state title by beating Liberty Union 7-6.
GUARDIANS BLANKED IN TEXAS
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Jacob deGrom allowed only three singles over six innings, Justin Foscue hit the first of Texas’ four home runs and the Rangers beat Cleveland 10-0 on Sunday, giving them three consecutive series wins for the first time this season.
Two-time Cy Young award winner deGrom (5-4) got his 101st career victory with six strikeouts, including the last four hitters he faced, and two walks. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 1.26 ERA in six home starts, and 43 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings.
Foscue’s two-run homer in the first put Texas up to stay. Josh Jung, Wyatt Langford and Michael Helman also went deep.
The Rangers (32-33) took two of three games against Cleveland, after the same at St. Louis since a three-game sweep of Kansas City at home last weekend. That 7-2 mark is their best nine-game stretch under first-year manager Skip Schumaker.
Cleveland left-hander Joey Cantillo (4-3) struck out seven in his five innings, but gave up seven runs and the first three Texas homers.
After striking out José Ramírez with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning, deGrom struck out the Guardians’ Nos. 3-5 hitters in the sixth. It was deGrom’s 261st career start since his MLB debut in 2014, and his first against Cleveland, the only team he had never faced.
Peyton Grey, Tyler Alexander and Luis Curvelo finished off the Rangers’ eighth shutout this season. The Guardians, 19-11 in their past 30 games, were held scoreless for the sixth time.
Jung’s eighth homer was part of a four-run third for Texas that included a two-run double by Ezequiel Duran, who finished with four hits and three RBIs.
Langford, in his third game back after missing 39 games with a right forearm strain, made it 7-0 with his homer in the fourth.
PIRATES SWEPT
ATLANTA (AP) -- Michael Harris II hit a three-run double in the seventh inning and the Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 to complete a three-game sweep Sunday.
Reynaldo López (3-1) earned the win with a scoreless seventh, and Tyler Kinley ended a bases-loaded threat in the eighth when he got Ryan O’Hearn to ground out to first base.
Braves rookie Didier Fuentes stranded two runners in the ninth for his first career save.
Harris came up as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh and the Braves trailing 2-0. With light rain falling, he drove the first pitch from Evan Sisk into the right-field corner to clear the bases.
The major league-leading Braves (45-21), limited to three hits, have won eight of 10.
Pirates first baseman Spencer Horwitz led off the game with a home run, his sixth in nine career games at Truist Park. He also had an infield single and extended his on-base streak to 15 games.
Pittsburgh’s Mason Montgomery served as an opener for the fourth time this season after pitching an inning in relief Saturday night. Montgomery stranded two in a scoreless first and has not given up a run as an opener this season.
Bubba Chandler (2-7) came on as a bulk reliever and cruised until the seventh, when an error by third baseman Tyler Callihan and two walks loaded the bases. He was pulled before Harris doubled off Sisk.
Braves starter Bryce Elder gave up two hits and two runs in six innings, his 10th quality start in 14 outings this season. He struck out four and walked two.
