FEAR THE RAMS
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Rams have unveiled two alternate uniforms designed to connect the current team to its rich California history.
At an event for season-ticket holders next to SoFi Stadium, the Rams revealed a new uniform that pays tribute to their 1951 NFL championship team with a yellow jersey and blue satin numerals in the style used 75 years ago. The Rams then introduced a white alternate uniform with blue numerals emulating the Rams’ primary look during the 1960s, an era best known for the team’s Fearsome Foursome defensive front.
The uniform with yellow jerseys and white pants is dubbed “Classic Sol,” while the all-white alternates with blue numerals are called “Fearsome White.” The Rams will still wear the three uniforms they used last season as well, including their main home and away looks along with their all-black “Midnight Mode” Rivalries uniform.
The Rams will debut their Classic Sol look on Monday night at home in Week 2 against the New York Giants, and they’ll come out again for a high-profile Thursday night home showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs in December. The Fearsome White uniforms will come out on Thanksgiving Eve for a home game against the Green Bay Packers.
The Rams were founded in Cleveland in 1937, but moved out west in 1946 to become Los Angeles’ most significant major professional sports team to that point. They subsequently won the city’s first major pro sports championship in 1951, beating the Cleveland Browns in the NFL title game at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
SETTING POLICY
Green Bay, Wisconsin (AP) -- Green Bay Packers president/CEO and Youngstown Mooney graduate Ed Policy says adjustments may be necessary as the NFL’s only publicly owned franchise attempts to remain financially competitive in the long term.
“It’s like other teams have access to this ATM machine that we just don’t have right now,” Policy said Friday as the Packers released their annual expenses and revenues for the 2026 fiscal year.
The Packers reported an operating loss for the first time in a non-pandemic year since the 1990 fiscal year, though the team’s overall net income was up 54.8%. The Packers had $132.5 million in net income due to the $133.6 million they received in nonoperating revenues, which included gains in corporate investments plus their share from ESPN’s purchase of NFL Network.
Each of the NFL’s 32 teams received $453.2 million from the NFL, which mainly comes from the league’s TV contracts.
In operating costs, the Packers reported $753 million in revenues and $754.1 million in expenses. Revenues were up 4.7%, but expenses increased 18.7%.
Policy emphasized the Packers have no plans to sell naming rights to Lambeau Field, but they are willing to do that with their practice facility.
NO LIMITS
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) -- Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been cleared to participate in the start of training camp, checking off one of the major goals that the two-time MVP set for himself when he underwent surgery late last year to repair torn ligaments in his left knee.
Mahomes said Friday he visited earlier this week with Dr. Dan Cooper, the Dallas-based orthopedic surgeon who performed the operation, and that he met all the benchmarks necessary to report to Missouri Western State University on time.
The Chiefs begin practice Saturday for rookies, quarterbacks and players coming off injuries. Full-squad work begins next week.
None of those players is more important than Mahomes, who hurt his knee late in a loss to the Chargers in December. He underwent surgery immediately afterward, and rather than spend the offseason at his Texas home like usual, Mahomes toiled away at the Chiefs’ practice facility, pushing forward with his rehab so he would be ready to go by the late-July start of camp.
“It was always the goal to be able to practice when I got to training camp. We kind of hit that step,” Mahomes said. “Now, it’s about building and keep getting better and better, so when the regular season comes around, I can be available.”
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Mahomes was fully cleared -- no limitations at all -- but that he would evaluate the cornerstone of the franchise on a daily basis. Whether he participates in any of the Chiefs’ preseason games remains to be seen.
The preseason opener against the Rams is Aug. 15. But the far more important date is Sept. 14, when the Chiefs welcome the AFC West-champion Broncos to Arrowhead Stadium for a marquee Monday night showdown in Week 1.
“We’ll see about games and all that once we get there,” Reid said, “but right now, we’re just taking it day by day.”
MILWAUKEE FAMOUS
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- CBS NFL analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence.
According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office’s arrest report, Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests after getting stopped while driving south on Interstate 43 on Thursday. Sheriff’s officials said Romo was taken into custody, booked and released.
He has a court appearance set for Sept. 21.
Romo went to high school about 35 miles from Milwaukee in Burlington, Wisconsin.
The 46-year-old Romo has been the lead game analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage since 2017 after making four Pro Bowl appearances during an NFL career that ran from 2004-16 and was spent entirely with Dallas.
CBS had no comment regarding the arrest.
