WEMBY ON COVER
NEW YORK (AP) -- Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs, Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and former NBA MVP Derrick Rose were revealed Wednesday as the cover athletes for NBA 2K27.
Wembanyama is on the cover of the Standard Edition, Clark is on the Deluxe Edition and Rose will appear on the limited-time Ultra Edition.
The Standard Edition launches widely on Sept. 4. Deluxe and Ultra editions launch with early access on Aug. 28.
Wembanyama said being on the cover was “a dream come true,” and Clark said being on a cover “is special because this game reaches fans all over the world.”
Rose was also on the cover of NBA 2K13.
SOX STREAK HALTED
BOSTON (AP) -- The last time the Boston Red Sox won 15 straight games, Ted Williams was putting up an MVP season in 1946 and leading them to an American League championship.
On Wednesday, the Red Sox matched that streak from 80 years ago, beating the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 in the opener of a doubleheader.
“I’ve read some stuff. I know Ted Williams was around back then, so I’m aware of the year and how long it’s been,” interim manager Chad Tracy said. “It’s cool that they’ve accomplished something great.”
The Baltimore Orioles ended Boston's franchise record-tying 15-game winning streak behind Kyle Bradish's six innings of one-run ball, defeating the Red Sox 5-1 in the nightcap Wednesday.
It was Boston's first loss since a 10-2 setback to Washington at Fenway Park on July 1.
$3 BILLION STADIUM
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Kansas City Chiefs unveiled on Wednesday the first renderings of their new $3 billion domed stadium set to open in 2031.
The fully enclosed stadium will feature translucent panels on the ceiling with a symmetrical and curved exterior. The new stadium will also pay homage to Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs home since 1972, and will seat around 70,000 people with a scalloped upper deck in the end zones.
The Chiefs announced in late December that they were moving from their longtime home at Arrowhead Stadium across the Kansas-Missouri state line. The move came after Kansas lawmakers voted to allow the state to issue a little more than $2.4 billion in bonds to cover about 60% of the cost of the stadium, a new training facility and retail and entertainment space.
The stadium will be built in Kansas City, Kansas, near Kansas Speedway and a retail district known as The Legends. The area is also home to Sporting Park, the home of MLS club Sporting Kansas City, and a minor league baseball stadium.
BECK SIGNS
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Arizona Cardinals have agreed to a four-year rookie deal with quarterback Carson Beck on Wednesday, one day before the team has its first practice of training camp.
The 24-year-old Beck looks as if he’ll be part of a three-man quarterback competition when training camp begins on Thursday, facing off against veterans Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew. Kedon Slovis is also on the roster. The Cardinals are led by first-year coach Mike LaFleur.
Beck was drafted in the third round out of Miami after leading the Hurricanes to a runner-up finish in the College Football Playoff last season.
BULLDOG SIDELINED
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Georgia running back Dante Dowdell was injured in a recent off-campus accident, and Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart said he will be indefinitely sidelined.
ESPN reported that Dowdell was involved in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident. The outlet confirmed with Smart that Dowdell is receiving care at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a medical facility specializing in treatment and rehabilitation for spinal cord and brain injuries.
“The Dante Dowdell situation is tough,” Smart told reporters. “I don’t know when he’ll be back. He had an off-campus accident back home during our break, and we’re praying for him and his family. We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we’re waiting to see.”
Dowdell transferred to Georgia after rushing for 560 yards and three scores last season for Kentucky. The tailback from Picayune, Mississippi, was slated to compete for carries behind starter Nate Frazier. Dowdell spent the 2024 season with Nebraska and the ’23 season at Oregon.
CURRY’S EXHIBIT
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Stephen Curry is headed to the Hall of Fame, making more basketball history with a first-of-its-kind exhibit for an active player.
Stephen Curry: Beyond the Arc is set to open Friday, celebrating the career of a two-time MVP and the NBA’s career leader in 3-pointers.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame said it was the first time in the museum’s nearly 75-year history that an active player would have a dedicated feature experience.
“My hope is that fans walk through this experience and feel the joy, the purpose and the gratitude that basketball has given me, and maybe see a little bit of their own journey in it too,” Curry said.
Developed in partnership with Curry’s Thirty Ink business team, the exhibit will feature video footage of Curry’s career, memorabilia and audio and video components that tell the story of a player who was overlooked going into college and has gone on to become a 12-time All-Star who led Golden State to four NBA championships.
The Hall of Fame expects Curry’s to be a limited time exhibit, likely to last through the summer of 2027 before closing.
