New Waterford prepares to take control of cemetery

NEW WATERFORD–Tuesday council approved a resolution confirming control and responsibilities of the New Waterford Cemetery being transferred to the village.

Once the cemetery is transferred to the village, a board consisting of two village residents and one current member from each area church will be appointed. Churches include the Lutheran Church, Abundant Life and the Methodist Church.

In other matters, the ten-foot unnamed alley shared with property owned by Abundant Life Fellowship has been vacated by the village.

In other business, resident John Hubbard offered input regarding the failure to pass an income tax during the last election. Hubbard believes council went about collecting funds in a way that benefited members of the community and he wishes residents valued their community.

“We’ve been in town for quite a while and it seems to be the administration over the years, current included, and your street, water, sewer and road crews seem to do a great job for a small town,” Hubbard said. “We have a jewel here.”

Hubbard remarked how nice it is to have a well-trained fire, EMS and police department. “I don’t know that the people in town realize just what they have for the small town of New Waterford,” he commented.

He advised other ambulances may be unavailable, extending response times. He wants residents to direct attention to New Waterford first responders.

“Luckily, we live in a low crime community,” Mayor Shane Patrone said. “We actually have more EMS calls that we handle outside the village that we make money on to help provide money for our EMS.”

Patrone worries residents do not want to pay money for services they have not used and feel less likely to need. According to Patrone the issue will be re-addressed at a later date and the village will continue to operate as it can.

He explained the village intends to come up with long term solutions to boost reliability rather than short term fixes.

Starting at $2.99/week.
