OSU Extension launches new health and wellness programs
Ohio State University Extension offices in Mahoning and Trumbull counties are rolling out a series of new educational programs aimed at improving community health, promoting sustainable food practices and expanding hands-on learning opportunities for residents of all ages.
Monthly “Med Instead of Meds” series to promote Mediterranean eating
OSU Extension is introducing Med Instead of Meds, a monthly virtual series designed to help participants adopt the Mediterranean way of eating through simple, practical and enjoyable lifestyle changes. The program focuses on seven key strategies to “Go Med,” emphasizing great taste, easy cooking tips and everyday habit-building techniques.
The lunchtime sessions will be held once a month on Tuesdays from noon to 1 p.m. Each meeting will focus on a different component of the Mediterranean pattern, beginning with an overview session on Jan. 27 and continuing through May 12 with topics including healthy fats, fruits and vegetables, protein choices and managing sweets.
The series is open to individuals of all ages in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Registration is available at go.osu.edu/mednotmeds.
PreventT2 Lifestyle Change Program returns in 2026
In response to strong community demand, OSU Extension – Mahoning County will again offer the PreventT2 Lifestyle Change Program beginning Jan. 28. The year-long CDC-approved course helps individuals at risk for type 2 diabetes make long-term changes to improve their health.
The program meets weekly on Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at the OSU Extension office, 490 S. Broad St. in Canfield, and runs through April 29 before transitioning into monthly maintenance sessions. Topics include healthy eating, portion control, stress management, staying motivated and adding physical activity into daily routines.
“Being part of a supportive group can make all the difference,” said LuAnn Duncan, Family and Consumer Sciences educator. “Participants gain tools for better health and support from others working toward the same goals.”
Pre-registration is required, and participants may miss no more than four sessions. More information is available at go.osu.edu/mahoningpreventt2 or by calling 330-533-5538.
Workshop to teach backyard maple syrup production
Residents interested in learning how to make their own maple syrup can participate in a Backyard Maple Syrup Production Workshop on Jan. 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mahoning County Extension office in Canfield.
The hands-on workshop is designed for beginners and hobbyists. Participants will learn how to identify suitable trees, tap them correctly, handle and boil sap, finish and package syrup safely and manage the overall health of maple trees. The $20 registration fee includes instruction, materials and two taps with tubing.
The program offers a unique opportunity for residents interested in homesteading, backyard food production or exploring a traditional Ohio skill.
These programs are part of OSU Extension’s ongoing effort to provide research-based education in health, agriculture, youth development and community improvement. Each initiative is designed to offer residents practical, achievable tools that support long-term wellness and meaningful skill-building.
