America is in the middle of an ugly divorce

To the editor: Liberals like to point out how smart and virtuous they are. They put signs in their yards signaling their virtue. Take a letter to the editor in the June 28 edition for instance. The writer said she voted for Biden and boasted that she would for him again. Let’s start with how virtually all new jobs are simply the recovery of jobs lost during the pandemic. Our deficit is higher than it has ever been in our history. Prices are surging more than in 30 years and wages can’t possibly compete with inflation. Gas was less than $2 not that long ago. We were energy ...

Vote ‘no’ on Ohio Issue 1

To the editor: Issue 1 has nothing to do with “protecting” Ohio’s Constitution and has everything to do with protecting the status quo. And what is the status quo? We have this election in August in the first place because very wealthy individuals and special interest groups have successfully bought their way into our democracy. The last thing they want are empowered Ohioans who vote — we’ll just get in the way of passing their agenda. So rather than sell us on the merits of their plan and allow for many public hearings, they forced Issue 1 to the ballot in a low turnout ...

Will vote for Biden again

To the editor: I voted for Biden and I will certainly vote for him again. Because I am smart enough to realize: 1. Record cuts to the deficit; 2. Record new business start-ups; 3. Record job creation; 4. Record wages; 5. The lowest peace time unemployment since before the Great Depression; 6. The best GDP growth in 40 years; 7. Improving our infrastructure; 8. Cutting prescription drug prices; 9. Protecting our natural resources; and, 10. No drama! He just works and gets things done for the betterment of our country. That is what is President is supposed to do. And again, no ...

Affordable Connectivity Program is essential

To the editor:  In about one year it is projected that a pivotal federal broadband program, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), will run out of funding, hurting not only the nearly 1 million Ohio households that currently depend on the program to stay connected, but also rural households here in Columbiana County that will rely upon the ACP’s existence to spur broadband infrastructure investment in areas that still lack access. The ACP plays a critical role in our state’s efforts to close the digital divide and get more folks online, it’s why Governor DeWine has pointed ...

State Rep provides electric rate information

To the editor: I have recently heard concerns from constituents in the 79th District regarding the electric rate increases that went into effect on June 1, 2023. As we head into the summer months and we worry about the hottest days ahead, I wanted to provide information on the latest increase and energy choice in Ohio. The rate changes follow a trend of increases that align closely with customers of the state’s other electric distributors. In Ohio, the standard service offer (SSO) is the default rate for generation supply that an electric distribution utility charges a customer who ...

Annexation – Detachment

The Ohio Revised Code provides the procedures to not only annex lands from a township to a municipality but to detach lands from a municipality back to a township. This precisely happened long ago between the City of Salem and the Township of Perry, and it happened in a new development started in the 1920s called “Salem Heights” containing both the north portion along Benton Road and the south portion across US 62 and SR 173. This is a matter of record although an old law. But it was brought to my attention by Joe Hoffman of Columbiana when he visited my Salem City Hall office ...
